Non-Nexus Android phone without bloatware?

Thread Starter
Is there such a thing as an Android phone without bloatware that's not a Nexus? As in, the handset maker uses stock Android and carriers are actively prevented from loading their crap onto the phone.

Don't think so.......

Every Cell provider loads what ever software they have contracts with.....

You can root a phone. Then, you control everything that is loaded onto it.

you aren't going to find the combination you're looking for outside of the nexus line.

It seems you want:

  • stock android
  • no bloat
  • timely updates

Honestly, you can really only have 1 of the traits at a time outside of the nexus line.

Stock android: (for the most part) extremely budget phones (ex: optimus v).
no (carrier) bloat: unlocked carrier free international version of a phone, but even then, it still has the manufacturer bloat.
timely updates: NO ONE outside the nexus line does this, the closest might be ASUS.

The closest thing to the nexus line you might find, might be in the Sony lineup, as they've been working with AOSP to provide experimental support for building.

This is your best bet, and here in Canada, you can pay someone to do it for you just about anywhere for $10-$20.

You can also do it yourself. Although it takes some time and research for your particular phone. There are usually a few different apps involved that you must get on your pc plus a couple that need to be downloaded to the phone. I did it on the OG Droid. I do not really see the need unless you plan on designing your own robust version of the OS though. It seems to me that while the root path gets rid of bloat ware, most phones are designed to function with all of that going on. Of course, I was rooting the OG Droid so the hardware was not very fast and I probably did not really see the difference that you might see with a current gen phone.

There are a ton of rooting sites/info out there. Readily available custom roms as well, for free. Nice thing there is that they'll design the rom to fix and add to the hardware of a specific phone and could give you the latest OS that wouldn't normally be available for the phone.

Nope. I dont know what u consider bloatware. I consider manufacturer UI and apps bloatware too. Basically its Nexus phone or rooted phone. You can find guides on rootinh gas well as large lsit of ROM on XDA

Yes, you can root your phone and run a custom rom such as Slim Beam. http://www.xda-developers.com is the best place I've found. I plan on rooting my Galaxy SII when I get it and installing the slim bean rom. This will void your warranty however and if you mess up rooting it you can brick your phone. Think of it like flashing your BIOS.
