Help with DDR3 frequency, Core 2 Duo

post #1 of 6
Thread Starter
So my friend has an old Core 2 Duo, E6750, and he asked me to help overclock it, so we can play games together, like BF3. I am not familiar with the 775 platform, my first PC was an AM3 setup.

However, doing my best, I got it overclocked to 3.6GHz, up from 2.66, 8x450MHz. It is stable (after doing a pencil mod to combat vdroop !!), but I can't seem to get the memory any higher than 1000-1100MHz. There are a few dividers in the bios, which with an FSB of 450MHz give us ~1200, 1350, 1500 and 1800MHz for the memory. But 1350 isn't stable, and 1500 wont boot at all.

Does anyone who had a setup like this remember anything that can help me?

Asus P5KC
Adata 8GB 1600, CAS 9
NB voltage: 1.4v
FSB voltage: 1.4v
CPU voltage: 1.4125v bios, ~1.37v idle/load

The P35 was the first DDR3 chipset and DDR3 support with it is usually pretty spotty. Higher DDR3 speeds can be tricky, especially with modern DDR3 memory. Try loosening FSB strap/tRD and increasing NB voltage.

Also, regarding vdroop, combating it to the extent that idle and load voltages are the same is usually counter productive.

Yeah, I wrote ~1.37, it's more like 1.38Xv idle, 1.36Xv load, it drops. It used to drop a lot more, 1.45v bios, 1.26Xv under load!

Let's see:

1. Maximum VTT (FSB termination voltage) should be 1.36 Volts for 24/7 use. Wolfdales and Yorkfields have been known to die or degrade very fast at a VTT setting of 1.40 or over.
2. Maximum PLL voltage should be 1.60V.
3. Don't be afraid to set your VCore high, Core2's are resilient in only VCore voltage above and beyond the maximum specs. (Intel's absolute maximum is 1.45)

Your friend's Wolfdale is of the same age with my Yorkfield and probably the same stepping too, i.e. C0 or C1. Overclocking these chips prime-stable is a ******* nightmare. I have spent days over the PC tampering with CPU clock Skews, NB clock skews, and GTL Ref 1/3/GTL Ref 0/2 controls. Prime stable overclocking these chips at a reasonable VCORE near 4GHz requires playing with ALL THOSE FOUR skews.

My Yorkie is stable with a NB Clock Skew of 200ps, CPU clock skew of 400ps, NB GTL Ref 0.60 and CPU GTL Ref 1/3-GTL Ref 0/2 controls set at 0.630/0.610 respectively.

I am guessing that you need to pump more NB Voltage (maybe 1.42V), more RAM voltage (max should be 2V), and then you need to adjust the NB GTL reference voltage to around 0.61 while playing with the GTL Ref 1/3/GTL Ref 0/2 controls which should be set at around 0.61 give or take (try values from 0.60 to 0.64 with all possible combos).

In the end, to run the mem at 1333 MHz, you may even need to adjust the RAM Reference Clock skews. Hope this helps.

P.S.: Update the board's BIOS to latest available and try adjusting the NB GTL ref to values above 0.61 to see if it makes a difference.

NB GTL Ref Voltage= a percentage of the NB voltage

example:
My NB Voltage=1.40
My NB GTL Ref=0.61
My NB Reference Voltage=0,854 volts

GTL reference voltage needs to be between 0.8 and 1 volts max.

Thanks. Will try those. Oh, the E6750 isn't a Wolfdale, it's a 65nm Conroe.

ps. A value of 0.64 is more demanding than a value of 0.61, right? (NB GTL Ref)

Okay. If it's a Conroe (65nm), then you have got even more latititude with respect to voltages.

Intel says 0.8500V-1.5V VCORE, so you can probably safely try up to 1.55V IN BIOS. That is ANANDTECH's recommendation.

The PLL Voltage and FSB Termination Voltage Absolute Max Values are different for 65nm chips than my 45nm chip. You need to look them up for yourself, but probably your FSB termination voltage of 1.4V is safe after all. In any case, the same rules apply for your Penryn, i.e. be extremely careful with PLL and VTT (FSB term) voltages.

Finally yes, NB Ref Voltage= a percentage of NB voltage, so:

0.61=61%
0.64=64%

CPU GTL Ref Voltage also works the same way only it is a percentage of the VTT(FSB term) voltage, not a percentage of the NB voltage.
