Upgrade from X58 680 to Z77 X79?

Thread Starter
So I´m feeling the upgrade itch. Have had this board for a long time, so im considering to get some more cpu power for the GTX 680 and going with a z77 or x79 board and an i7 ivy. Is it worth it or should i wait for haswell, from what I´ve read its might not be worth it. But it would be nice with some input, sig rig btw smile.gif

Nice system.
Agreed, not quite worth it yet to upgrade. A better cooler and overclocking the 920 until Haswell comes out would be my advice. If you're on a budget, when Haswell come out the Ivy Bridge CPU will drop in price.

I wouldn't change. X58 is still going strong, and gaming-wise, the difference is unnoticeable. Also, the only worthwhile reason to go X79 is if you need a hexa or octo-core CPU, otherwise you'd be fine with Z77.

I do agree with OS-Wiz though, a better OC (or a better CPU, my Xeon D0 does 4 GHz @1.30v) and cooling would stretch the life of that rig, at least until SB/IB parts are cheap after Haswell release.

Your system is still strong and you won't be all WOW! with the new one with one GTX 680. Wait for the new stuff coming out.

I would wait too until Haswell is out. A lot of speculations and not real results so you shouldn't rush for an upgrade.

I'm on the same boat, I was wondering if an upgrade for x79 or z77 would be a good choice, but I decided, unless I find a great deal, to wait for Haswell and maybe Ivy Bridge-e if the first one results don't convince me.

You got a great rig for the moment, you should be patient. thumb.gif

thanks oz-wiz and thanks all for the input, you saved me some money smile.gif Have been tinkering with overclocking the cpu to 4ghz but can´t get any further on my own. My temps are pretty good though, so maybe i should make a post in the oc forum to get some help to reach 4ghz. Is haswell out this year or next?

Have also been thinking about upgrading my monitor as thats probably the weakest link, but thats also a major headache, with deciding between korean ips, dell ips, or a gaming monitor rolleyes.gif

I recommend doing the following
1-add one more 4 GB ram for the new build as it will be either Dual or Quad channel
2-get a better cooling system as it can also be used on socket 1150 (Water)
^ both upgrades will be carried to the next build
3-Upgrade the monitor

These are the only things you need +a Z87 mobo and an i7 4770k (when released)
