[fudzilla] Nvidia believes mobile GPUs will outpace consoles soon - Page 15

Source that Nvidia doesn't have next-gen hardware capable of competing with AMD?

Source that Nvidia wouldn't allow low level access to their GPUs in a console? (I actually don't know anything about this part. Maybe there's an example of a developer saying that with the PS3?)

What's wrong with Nvidia not accepting low ball deal? They're not in it to break even....
Quote:
“We had to look at console business as an opportunity cost. If we say, did a console, what other piece of our business would we put on hold to chase after that?” he said.

“In the end, you only have so many engineers and so much capability, and if you’re going to go off and do chips for Sony or Microsoft, then that’s probably a chip that you’re not doing for some other portion of your business.”
Source

Titan is a valid GPU. Most 7970's came out costing $600 dollars. With all this debacle about the frame-time issues and PLENTY of users who've had both SLI/CFX this generation say it was a difference between "night and day." So a titan delivers on it's FPS. Crossfired 7970's appears to have a BIG issue.

Most of you are discussing the consumer market gains/losses and that's all well + good but, most of you don't realize that the consumer world =/= business world.

AMD won 2 consumer contracts.

Nvidia won MANY business level contracts + 4/5 consumer contracts

In terms of who came out ahead, Nvidia did...Nvidia made a push for the business market and essentially cornered the mobile market.

Businesses account for well over half of Nvidia/AMD's actual profit margins...Not consumers...Businesses.

AMD will make a great splash in the consumer market and it needs that but, in terms of who's stock is going to rocket; look no further then NVDA.

Yes, Nvidia is bragging about it but, they made a move that would make even Sun Tzu, blush.

This.

There is no doubting that picking up the contracts for both the PS4 and Durango is a good boost for AMD as far as the consumer market is concerned. Afterall, it is estimated that they will make $284m from the next-gen consoles this year alone.

However, Nvidia is not butt-hurt in any single way. They have been pushing into new markets (mobile predominantly) incredibly hard over the past 4-5 years and have made no secret about it. Nvidia make most of their money, as mentioned by Masked, from their business ventures. Through their supercomputer, high-end workstation, server contracts, and mobile chips. There is a reason why Nvidia have been marketing Tesla really hard these past few years, its their prime money maker. Now, they are beginning to heavily invest in Tegra and their mobile chips as they see that market (correctly) as being a HUGE market (if it isn't already) within the next 2-3 years. If Nvidia can cash in on the mobile chip market along side their supercomputer applications.......AMD winning the contract to manufacture CPU's and GPU's for both Sony and MS just became totally irrelevant as Nvidia would make money that is exponentially higher than anything they would have made manufacturing console related chips.

So there is no Nvidia butt-hurt here people. Both companies are heading in different directions. Most logical people would argue that Nvidia are doing the smart thing (just look at their record sales and profits), however there is also no denying that this is a good thing for AMD.

Both companies are also in totally different financial positions, which I would hazard a guess and say that definitely had a large part to do with this. Nvidia can afford not to bother with the console market as they are doing incredibly strong financially, they're gaining market share, and most of all, whilst we are talking about the GPU branch of AMD, they still fall under the same AMD parent company that is getting slaughtered in the CPU segment and is in financial dire straits. So to sum it up, AMD needed to get these contracts in order to get in some assured revenue, Nvidia did not.

But yeah...AMD is really being the darker side in this mess.

Which consoles? the Ps4 and Xbox (720?)....NO! Of course mobile chips will beat out the PS3's GPU....it's THEIR own GPU! Why would you guys think otherwise?!?! I'll just copy/paste the example I gave before "why are you guys so against this idea that FUTURE technology will beat the PASTS? Again, you believe all what Nvidia says. It won't continue in the console business because console companies didn't want them. Because they are not profitable and their hardware is not good enough at the given price point.

And now because they were not picked, they bash everyone, how respectful is that?

Nvidia reminds AMD that they have a titan, a perfectly valid GPU that decimates AMD's offering.

This is very arrogant coming from Nvidia. The Titan is 1,100$... that is even more arrogant for the consumers.

In these threads, I see how big Nvidia PR influence is big on the consumers.
Nvidia is far from being modest/humble/respectful.

I yawn at Tegra 4, it will be laughable for tablets with Tegra 4 when compared to a tablet that contains dual core Temash. Even Intel HD 4000 is better, right? biggrin.gif

Nvidia could very well sell SONY their GPU's for much cheaper, but, with their endeavors in other markets (markets that AMD isn't even in), how can they juggle everything and be good at all? They have to cut something, and they determined it was the console market due to its thing profit margins. Makes perfect sense to me. It was also very arrogant of AMD saying that Nvidia doesn't have the hardware to compete.

Well obviously. The consoles haven't gotten a refresh in a decade, plenty of time for the mobile devices to catch up. Considering the next console will not have a refresh for maybe another decade, the pace for mobile devices getting faster is significantly higher.

Well I actually believe that mobile devices can over take the PS4 and the next xbox. The graphics power in mobile devices has grown rather quickly lately. The consoles will be stuck with what they have till the next release. If mobile devices keep increasing at even half of what they have over the last five years I can see them inching past them shortly before the consoles get refreshed again...and that is assuming anyone will even want a console over a phone/tablet with HDMI output to a TV. There may not be another console refresh after this one.

I don't think so, at one point, mobile industries will start to be saturated like the rest of technology.

Unless you want mobile to be like this:
