Are you forgetting that Nvidia already burned their bridges for those mobile contracts?

There were supposed to be many more NV based devices out now than there actually are, NV missed 3 deadlines on delivered products. Either by having non-functional hardware, or by missing the power envelope by 50-100%.

This argument should be centered on mobile chips like the GTX 780M. That is a gaming chip. Tegra 4 is not. By the way that chip alone (780M) will cost more than most next-gen consoles. Anyway, anyone mentioning a smart phone chip for gaming seriously is out of their mind. Tegra 4 is supposed to last all of 2013 and has only 1/3rd of the power of xbox 360...

I've got GTA3 on my SGS3. It looks just as good as it did back on my PS2. Add a proper controller and it would be just as fun. It's a serious game, your expectations are just too high.

No one really expects the mobile phone to replace the home console for "hardcore" gaming (and if you're going to make that argument, I'll gladly point out that REAL hardcore gaming is exclusive to PC anyway). People carry their phones in their pockets EVERYWHERE though. They'll certainly replace (and in fact already have replaced) handheld gaming consoles, and for the average user, are probably even good enough to justify not needing to pick up the next iteration of the Nintendo Wii.


So yeah, in short, Nvidia is full of it, but the foundation of their argument isn't nearly as absurd as the actual execution.

tegra 2: ~4gflops
tegra 3: 12gflops
tegra 4: 70gflops

What's going to happen next gen or the gen after that when they move to a unified architecture and keep up the same kind of performance increases? They're going to beat the current gen consoles just like the article in the OP says.

The only limiting factor currently is power constraints. ARM and Imagination both offer the ability to use quite large GPUs, but these don't fit the current power usage and heat dissipation constraints, so they aren't used. Also worth mentioning is that deferred rendering on mobile GPU designs allows them to do less rendering for the same scene.

The mobile tablet/smartphone market is huge, but most people could care less about one company's chip having a little more performance over another company's chip. I'm still using an iPad 2 and it has no problem playing games and doing everything else I need it to do. NVIDIA's Tegra may be big if companies like Apple, Samsung, and Amazon adopted it (Wide Spread Adoption Across All devices), but I do not see that happening.

I think NVIDIA is just mad because they could not secure a console contract. Gaming consoles (Now Called Entertainment Consoles) are the number one affordable source for AAA games. Just about everyone I know with kids has a gaming console or two. Gaming consoles outsell computer game hardware by thousands! I have reason to believe NVIDIA is going to feel the pain if these next generation gaming consoles turn out to be good...

People game on Tablets and Smartphones, but I do not see NVIDIA's Tegra really being needed. Where I do see it being use is in a mobile gaming device, but not tablets and definitely not phones. Most AAA titles on tablet = yawn and frustration, even worse on little stinky phone screen. I still cannot beat freaking sonic on my tablet do to the touch screen controls, just got annoyed and gave up. Tablets are better suited for causal games like Angry Birds, Chess, Words With Friends, some race car games and flying games. But anything that requires accuracy becomes frustration and then yawning kicks in! The AAA mobile tablet/smartphone gaming market is far from being mainstream, many, many years.

I re-read the article and you're indeed correct. I really think nvidia makes awesome mobile discrete GPUs, but I have doubts about smartphone chips - even the next gen ones. The rate of GPU increase year over year hasn't been nearly as high as nvidia is suggesting, at least not for smartphone chips. For mobile discrete GPUs, yeah, I can see a viable argument there.

We'll see I guess. In the meantime, I certainly look forward to GTX700M ultrabooks. The 600M were great GPUs and I expect great things from the 700M series as well. I plan on getting a Haswell + GTX700M variant ultrabook this summer thumb.gif

Post-Tegra 4 is basically moving into mobile discrete GPUs if I recall correctly. Tegra 5 is mentioned to have Kepler/CUDA while Tegra 6 will have the first mobile 64-bit CPU arch, 3D transistors and Maxwell in it. So... maybe its claims aren't so far off?

I'll believe it when it happens. Tegra 4 performs terribly in terms of modern 3D graphics and the rate of yearly change has not been that great. Tegra 4 would need to be 3 times faster just to come close to xbox 360 level stuff. We'll see.
