[fudzilla] Nvidia believes mobile GPUs will outpace consoles soon - Page 9

Cramming a GT 650M-level GPU into an SoC is something I'd like to see in the next two years.

Lol such a retarded article. Of course you will see a stagnant piece of technology become outclassed "soon" by an evolving peace of technology. Such a retarded comparison to make.

If you want a fair comparison Nvidia, compare your Tegra 5 with the current PS4 hardware. Don't think that you can exchange your mobile GPU in your device... You're stuck with technology either way you get it. Not like a new smartphone/mobile gamer device is going to be substantially cheaper than a console to warrant frequent changes in hardware.

Man such a dumb article. Nvidia comparing apples to oranges to hype their new line of mobile gpus.

Until they make Fallout 4/Skyrim 2/HL3 for ARM based processors - consider me unimpressed with the hype.

Now someone is telling me to game on the Tegra 4. To that I say, GOOD JOKE.

Now, mobile chips such as the 700M are great chips for gaming. You can make a compelling argument there. But smart phone chips absolutely suck and are outpaced by even 10 year old consoles......Heck, the tegra 4 doesn't even HAVE unified shaders. It is in no way usable for serious gaming, unless you want to play angry birds or bejeweled on a big screen rolleyes.gif. Now, next gen mobile chips you say. Whatever. Smartphone chips have increased 10-20 Gflops per year for many years now. There is absolutely no way they're going to create anything remotely close to 700M/7970M in a smartphone chip, not for many years. Understand that all smartphone chips including the Tegra 4 have laughable capabilities, eclipsed by xbox 360 from 10 years ago.

This argument should be centered on mobile chips like the GTX 780M. That is a gaming chip. Tegra 4 is not. By the way that chip alone (780M) will cost more than most next-gen consoles. Anyway, anyone mentioning a smart phone chip for gaming seriously is out of their mind. Tegra 4 is supposed to last all of 2013 and has only 1/3rd of the power of xbox 360...

So its only 1/3rd the performance of a 360, yet it uses 27 times less power. That IS an improvement. Xenon 360's required 150-180 watts while gaming. Tegra 4 needs 4-8 watts.....

They're trying to get hours of usage out of these things. Of course if they wanted to beat the 360s performance, they could, but who wants a mobile device that either lasts 25 minutes, or weighs 10 pounds because of the battery?

No reason to stretch for a GTX 780M to beat a 360. The first mobile gpu to beat the 360's was the GTX 8700M. Came out when lost planet came out as one of the first dx10 games, though its pathetic in todays standards.

Lol, yeah sure, console owners are using multimeters to check the power from the wall socket rolleyes.gif That's obviously incredibly important for a console.

Hardly whining but I digress. What NV is saying here is quite accurate and has nothing whiny about it. They're essentially saying that their mobile stuff will beat the console GPU they made 7 years ago or so.

Honestly in every thread you defend NV like you work for them.

Get over yourself, be realistic. They lost out on the consoles, and are now pushing their mobile department forward.
As to their chips outperforming consoles in gaming, not any time soon.

Nvidia doesn't care about consoles, why do you people think they do? It's easier for them to focus on this, the mobile sector and make contracts there. As humans grow exponentially, so does the need for phones. Consoles are the same way, however performance on those doesn't exactly go up as quick. Set hardware for X years means no real performance gain. Where as the mobile sector is doing nothing but going up, each year a new iteration (not exactly, but quicker than consoles), each year brings in new people that want a phone. It's a win win, all around. Where as consoles are generally contracted out cheaper for a larger supply.

Ugh, to put it bluntly... Hardware for consoles is generally done on a large scale contract, as is expected. Where the mobile chips aren't done on such a large scale, nobody expects Tegra4 to sell as many units as the Xbox did. What does this mean? Simply, Nvidia can make more on higher priced lower quantity contracts than AMD will make on a single large scale contract. Especially since each iteration gets better, so they have a better edge on where to price the contract. Nvidia gives a rats about consoles compared to mobile, it's pennies to them.

Remember Xbox 360's thermal issues and how chips would become loose due to thermal expansion? The Red Ring of Death?

The hotter the components, the more fans and a bigger heatsink is required, which will drive up manufacturing costs.

No they aren't. Not even close. You're just saying that because you're playing on a 4 inch screen. If you were to actually play it on a 46 inch LED you would notice how crappy the games are for phones. They look like trash in comparison.

Main concern though - battery life... I constantly need to carry my charger along with me lol
