8 PIN CPU POWER CONNECTOR PROBLEM. HELP!!

Thread Starter
I have a rather unique issue with my 8 pin connector on my mobo. I have looked at multiple threads on many websites, with no success. my problem is that when I boot up my pc everything works fine, fans, leds, etc... I have a intel dx58S02 which has a digital post code read out on the mobo. its fails to run through the post codes, its doesn't even power on. I turn the pc off and leave it in stand by. PSU plugged and powered on, I narrowed it down to the 8 pin cpu connector. I unplug the connector and plug it back in. boot up the pc and it works fine I can leave the rig on for weeks. once I shut down the pc it does the same thing. may take multiple unplugs on the 8 pin connector to get it to work. once its up it runs great!! any help on this issue would be amazing

What your are try to say is, you have a open somewhere on the 8 pin CPU power cable.

If your power supply is under warranty you, can RMA it.

Another option is find the bad spot on the wire/connector. Oftentimes through a visual inspection is enough. Sometimes those pins will start to pop out of the connector, but not all the way out, just enough to cause connection problems. (I have had this happen to me.) You can push the pins back into the connector until it clicks with a small pair of pliers. Sometimes a wire gets pinched and causes a break. Sometimes the wire will start to pull out of the pins. If you pop the pins out of the connector to take a closer look, that might help too (you can do this with a small screw driver).

If you still can't find anything, take a digital multimeter, and measure the voltages (Power supply pinout is listed right here --> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATX ) Wiggle the cable while measuring the voltages. See if you can find the open.

Once you find the open, depending on where it is depends on how you fix it. I can post more specific directions on how to repair the cable once we identify the problem.
