Loud MSI R7950 Looking to replace or Switch.

post #1 of 30
Thread Starter
So I have had my MSI R7950 Twin Frozr for awhile now.
No issues what so ever playing games on my eyefinity setup.

I do however have an issue with the noise.
I run a XSPC RayStorm kit for my CPU and everything else in my case is whisper quiet.

Whenever my GPU's fan gets up to 57% speed (I tested with Afterburner to get the exact speed) or higher it sounds like a leaf blower is sitting in my case.

I've cleaned it and re-applied thermal paste which has helped by getting temps a little lower so the fans don't kick on as soon.

But it still pretty much always happens.

So I found a friend that doesn't mind the noise since he doesn't have his tower next to him on his desk and he's willing to purchase it off me without me losing much on it.

Now I'm looking to switch to either another 7950 (Quieter one though) or switch to team Green even.

If I switch to Nvidia what all changes will I have to make to run NVSurround?

Any opinions and input will be appreciated ! Please though no arguing which is better NVidia or AMD as I don't have a personal preference either way.

Either go ASUS /EVGA Sig 2/GB WF3 GTX 670 (~$50-80 difference), add a waterblock for the GPU (~$60-160 (fullcover)), or grab an Arctic Accelero 7970 (~$80)?
* also http://koolance.com/gpu-200-video-card-vga-chipset-water-block
* if using 7970 PCB , http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=59_971_240_587&products_id=36150
* http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=59_971_240_579&products_id=36162 according to http://www.coolingconfigurator.com/step1_complist?gpu_gpus=600

You just have to work out the details re: fittings and whether the pump can handle having also GPU

edit: Looking for acoustic reviews for you. PowerColor Radeon HD 7950 PCS+ seems to do rather well

GTX 670 arent really noisy, you might want to consider one.

Yeah I thought about a waterblock. But not sure the RS240 radiator will be enough to cool both my CPU and the GPU.

If you want to stick with the 7950, the ASUS HD 7950 DirectCU II is as silent as it gets. Also it runs very cool(one of the coolest in fact).

As for the switch from eyefinity to surround, I don't think you need to change anything. Nvidia has the upper hand when it comes to multi GPU-multi monitor setups(stuttering becomes more apparent with CFX). Also you can run straight DVI on all 3 of your monitors. Other than this it comes down to each game, drivers etc.

+1 for the PCS+ 7950; supposed to be quieter than MSI's TFIII (TPU review here)
Might be worth a shot unless you just want to throw a block on the card and add it to your loop.

EDIT:

Here's a good user comparison from an older thread.

Yeah that def shows to be quieter. As a note my MSI is silent when I'm just browsing the web and/or watching a movie etc. It's just when I'm playing anything that actually taxes the card, Crysis3, BF3 (on ultra settings in eyefinity), etc.

Since I've already commited to selling my card to a friend.
I think I am gonna look into that PowerColor card.

Looks nice and from the reviews everyone says it's pretty dang quiet.

Anyone have any input on a Nvidia card that would compete for around the same price?
So far only thing I found that I'd be interested in for the price range is this here.

Any other input?

Given your concerns with noise, you'd probably have to keep it to a non-ref 660Ti for comparable pricing; something along the lines of an ASUS or EVGA Signature card.

I'd go with a DCII card. The 670 DCII I had was silent up to about 65% fan speed. In Crysis 3 it kept the card between 60-65°C (1.175 V). I don't know how the same cooler performs on their revised 7950 though.
