Black screens

Thread Starter
Hello,

I'm having a problem with my PC (specs in the sig), sometimes when I turn on the PC it displays a black screen just after "Loading Windows". at this point I tried disconnecting the DVI plug from the PC and plugging it back in, sometimes it displays the desktop and other times it doesn't.

Sometimes when the PC have been running for about 15+ minutes I try to restart, the shutdown process takes about a minute long and after it restarts nothing is displayed on the screen not even the bios posting.

In both situations I can hear the windows logon sound and seems it booted perfectly but without video.
I've tried both the graphics card outputs and built-in motherboard outputs and no go.
Tried clearing CMOS by removing the battery for 15 mins and no go.
Checked both ram sticks they seemed to be fine.
Placed the graphics card in other PCIE slots nothing changed.

I don't know what else to do.
Is my motherboard bricked? or is it something else I'm missing?
If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate them.

Thanks smile.gif

Perhaps there is cracked solder point somewhere on the motherboard PCB that when running your PC for 15 minutes it would make it hot thus expanding the solder on some point and making less contracted connection between the solder on the PCB, preventing any video output and booting to the OS, i had a similar problem with an old build years ago, i could't actually figure out back then where the cracked solder was, i bet that's what's happening to you.

Although without further in depth testing you never know. but as far as repairing it, i doubt you'll have much luck.

Trying your card in another slot eliminates the possibility of it being a slot issue. Have you verified your running the latest drivers for your GPU and chipset?

When you are able to get it to boot into windows, and you can see the desktop, try looking at the Event Viewer and see if perhaps the graphics driver is crashing. If it is there will be an event for it.

Have you tried booting into safe mode? If you can boot into safe mode with video 100% of the time, it would indicate that whatever your issue is, could be caused by software. Let us know what you come up with.

This happened to me too when I have my TV connected to my computer as well (via HDMI) somehow my computer screen projects to the TV even though the TV is off. I hear sound (windows login) but I don't see anything on my screen (Then I turn on the TV and there it is) I fixed it by going into the BIOS and choosing PEG2 (decides where to show main video)

I'm not sure if you have a similar setup, just sharing my thoughts, maybe this can help.

OK I've put a HDTV next to the monitor, The HDTV works correctly and the monitor doesn't!
I can't believe I spent whole yesterday trying to fix a completely problem free case!
The monitor won't even display it's own menus indicating it's the 100% cause of the black screens.

Thanks for all your inputs guys.
