Best 7950 at the moment for OC-ing (so voltage unlocked) /w limited choice...

Thread Starter
With all the changes over time in the development of the 7950 (hardware/bios/drivers), I was wondering which the best option is for now.

I was gonna go for the Gigabyte 7950 WF3, but now I read everywhere that the new models are voltage locked (hardware, can't be solved with a bios flash)
So my attention switched to the Sapphire Vapor-X, which may or may not be locked. I'm reading a lot of contradicting posts. But from what I understood the voltage is unlocked in the standard bios. But the temps on the VRM go way too high. So not sure about that one too.

So, with all knowledge we have now which is the best 7950. Availability here is a problem, so XFX and HIS is very difficult to find.

My options are:
Sapphire: (not sure why there are so many different models, what's the difference between 20G and 40G for instance...)
11196-16-20G
11196-09-40G (Vapor-X)
11196-07-40G (FleX)
11196-02-40G
11196-01-40G
11196-01-20G
11196-00-40G (cheapest @ 275e)

Gigabyte:
GV-R795WF3-3GD (Windforce 3)

ASUS:
HD7950-DC2T-3GD5
HD7950-DC2T-3GD5-V2

MSI:
R7950-2PMD3GD5/OC (@340e the most expensive)
GDDR5 R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC

So which one is the the most likely to run stable between 1100/1200 without the temps freaking out? Which one is voltage unlocked for sure? And which one keeps the VRM the coolest?

I know the question has been asked many times, but with all the changes in bios and drivers the old benchies aren't really representable anymore.
I'm leaning towards the Vapor-X, but the price is quite high @ 312e.. Is it worth the extra cash?

Thanks.

I ended up getting the Gigabyte WF3. The voltage is locked in at 0.95 V. I ended up being able to get 1130/1580 on mine. Temps hit 58C with the fan at roughly 50%.

Er, meant 1.25. I'll do a Furmark run and post the results.

Can't get Furmark running, but the temp tops out at about 56 running Vantage on Extreme Preset. (with 1080p). Fan hits 50%.

Sorry the Gigabyte Windforce you can unlock thru a Bios update - i believe

Also - dont use Furmark to test stability. Id run either Heaven demo on loop to get a baseline - then use other games to make sure - i find Bioshock Infinite, Starcraft 2 and Tomb Raider quickly show artifacting where Heaven wont.

I just use it for maximum temp.

My options are:
Sapphire:
11196-09-40G (Vapor-X)

Thanks.
For starters, i will only talk about Sapphire.

Yes, it seems like there are alot of different versions out there.
I can tell you this, i have a card with one of the SKU-numbers you mentioned above, 11196-09-40G. Its a dual-BIOS card with boost. I run this @ bios1, none boost. Stock 850 / 1250MHz.
With MSI AB(latest beta) i can fully adjust both the VDC and the MVDC. I can report that temperatures and VRMs are more then OK. Not exceeding 80°c with full OC.

Keep in mind that even tho that is the same SKU#, there is also something called Part#. And it could be a huge difference there aswell...

Above temperatures are after a couple of 3DMark runs. But hey, add another 15°c to get the "Furmark temps", and you still wont exceed 80°c.
Also take note of the max fanspeed. Only 42%, so the VP-X is not just a good cooler it is also very quite. I could set the fan to 100%( and let my Antec P280 leave ground... biggrin.gif ) and drop the temps another 10°-15°c.

Next picture just shows another 100MHz on the memory, i forgot to add the temperatures there. But there is no big difference in the temperatures.
Also i got a pretty low ASIC-value, 59.1%. But i will keep this card anyway. I am happy with this OC and everything. No way i can complain with a 350-400MHz of OC, right?

If you(or anyone else) want more information about the card or whatever, just ask. smile.gif
