Friend argues Prime 95 is useless. I need others opinions to ease it. - Page 5

prime95 isn't useless. And the new version takes a lot longer than 12 hours to complete all of the tests. If you can't pass all tests at the default 15 minutes per test then you're not stable.

IBT is a joke btw.

The reason I like Prime95 as a stability program:
- stresses the CPU - lots of heat
- stresses the IMC - Blend 90% ram used

- Error checking - looks to see that the CPU is giving correct results.

Lots of stress programs can heat up the CPU without it crashing, but if the CPU is giving off incorrect calculations then you'll corrupt your OS in no time.

Correct; no one with any sense has ever claimed otherwise.

However, the original poster of this has completely missed the purpose behind stress testing.

You don't run 24 hours of Prime to guarantee you can run 24 hours of Prime (I'd run at least 250 hours of prime to guarantee it would pass any given 24 hour run at the same settings). You run 24 hours of Prime so you can be fairly certain that the system will handle days, weeks, or months of less strenuous loads that utilize the same components.

Every individual test has it's limits. WoW does not just utilize your CPU cores, or even your whole CPU and memory sub system. It's more complex than that. It's fair to say that if your system passes 12 hours of Prime95 Small FFTs, crashing in a game is almost certainly not the fault of the CPU cores or L2 cache. However, that still leaves the L3 cache, the IMC, the RAM, the QPI/HTT/FSB interconnect to the chipset, the chipset itself, the GPU, any other support hardware, and drivers/software. Prime95, no matter the settings, can only test the CPU and memory subsystems, and is not perfect even for these. You need to test them all individually, and all of them together, preferably with many different tests, before you can be reasonably certain of stability.

These facts do nothing to lessen the value of Prime95, they simply mean you have to have some idea of what you are doing when you stress test. Most people don't have a clue, and that's on them, not their tools.
