Cooler for FX-4170

Thread Starter
Finally got my $89 FX-4170 today smile.gif

Looking for a cooler for it as I wish to overclock.

Xigmatek Gaia SD1283
http://www.amazon.com/Xigmatek-Computer-Heatsink-GAIA-SD1283/dp/B006ICA49G/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364852368&sr=8-1&keywords=xigmatek+gaia

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Hyper-212-RR-212E-20PK-R2/dp/B005O65JXI/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1364852996&sr=1-5&keywords=cooler+master+hyper+212+evo

Is the extra ~$15 justified for the Hyper 212 EVO? Or is the Xigmatek the one I should get in this case? I'm looking for a high overclock, around 4.6-ish at least with the Gigabyte 970A-UD3... maybe 5Ghz for a one-time benchmark and that's it... should I be looking at better cooling?

which case do you have?

If it is within your budget I would recommend the EVO over the Gaia. Since the FX-4170 uses 125W and you plan on overclocking it I would recommend a better cooler, especially for a 5GHz run.

Case is a Thermaltake V3 Black Edition. From what I've read, both should just about fit.

Budget is not really an issue, I just like to keep costs down smile.gif Would you advise me to go with a liquid cooling solution instead? Especially for a 5Ghz run? If there is no need to splurge the extra money, Hyper 212 EVO is sufficient?
Having a liquid cooler would reduce your temps and increase the likelihood of a 5GHz run. I recently got a liquid cooler and with it I was able to do 5GHz.
EDIT: I would advise a liquid cooler because it is much safer (temp-wise) than an air cooler.

Well if its not too expensive I believe I can get one. Any particular ones to look at? I recently saw a review on Anandtech, the Corsair H55 seems to be a really good choice. What about Antec or Thermaltake, any other makes as well?

The H55 looks like an excellent cooler. I haven't used it before so I can say much about it, but it looks better than a Hyper 212 EVO. Just make sure you have enough room in your case to install it, looks can be deceiving. Look at spec measurements to make sure it fits.

Thanks! Alright, will have a look through Amazon and see what's available.

Any opinions on these DIY alternatives here? I really like these little homemade projects, something to give me some time and a reason to mess with my computer haha.

Yes the H60 is probably better, but it does cost more.
