Starting gaming PC for my son. What to use under $1000?

Thread Starter
I have a little experience building a PC. I last built an i7 940 flight sim computer for my son in 2008-9.

My youngest son wants a gaming PC so I'm getting back into building again. Wow, all the tech has changed so much in the last 5 years.

Here's my request: What components would you use today to build the fastest PC possible for under $1000? Reply with your list of hardware/Windows OS.

I would like to stick to Intel for CPU.
I would like an nVidia based GPU (unless you can make good points for something else.)

If the system can be overclocked easily, even better! But reliability is the key. This will be at my ex's house and I won't be available to troubleshoot much without bringing the entire computer back to my house.

Finally, my son says he plays "the arma series" and "dayz" most often. No idea what that means. His current PC is his stepdad's and it's a piece of crap (his words). He may jump to more CPU/GPU intensive games if he had a computer to do it.

Thanks for the help again! This is a great forum! Glad to be back!

If the motherboard supports Overclocking, then drop a GTX 680 in the bad boy and call it a day!

Get an AMD GPU. The HD 7950 is a very good deal and you get free games with it.
For CPU go with an i5 3570k. I am not very sure about a motherboard. Maybe one of MSI's Z77 boards? If you want to get a new case then the Fractal Design R4 is good silent case. For the PSU go with a corsair TX650 v2. For storage a WD 1TB Blue drive or black (blacks are a bit too loud for my taste) and if you can pack a SSD there then you can get a 64GB SSD, although I would go for a 128GB if you could stretch your budget a bit more.

That is all I can write. I am not on my computer right now and I cannot give you a larger detailed list.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: What resolution will he be playing at?

Well to cover the PSU as a start you dont need more then 550 watts max for a PC with a single video card and even that is a little overkill if you go for a low end video card

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=17091194 <-- my overclock best bang for your buck build with quality parts wink.gif
this system is pretty close to what i have.
7950 gives more power for less money than nvidia
the i7-3770k is easy enough to overclock that not much work is needed to get it up to 4.5 or higher. also if his graphics card ever dies, he'll have the onboard back up till replaced wink.gif

No, this is a completely new system for my 14 year old. The other computer is still in use as a flight sim cockpit and is my older son's system.
