Starting gaming PC for my son. What to use under $1000? - Page 2

I would recommend an

HD7950 $280
I5 3570K processor. $220
Gold rated 600w PSU $80
23" Monitor $100
Fractal Arc Mini case (LOVE MINE) $80
mATX motherboard $100
240GB Samung 840PRO SSD $180
8GB (2x4gb) 1600mhz memory $40

Should be had for about $1k

That's a nice base to look at imo.

If you insist on Nvidia, your best bet is the GTX 670, but if not the GTX 660 Ti. Anything lower won't put out decent framerate on Arma. Dayz is a mod for Arma (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DayZ).

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/NMT7

Price breakdown by merchant: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/NMT7/by_merchant/
Benchmarks: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/NMT7/benchmarks/

CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($189.99 @ Microcenter)
CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC12DX_BK 68.5 CFM CPU Cooler ($59.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($139.99 @ Newegg)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($56.99 @ NCIX US)
Storage: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($59.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Asus GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB Video Card ($286.98 @ SuperBiiz)
Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case ($89.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Rosewill Capstone 650W 80 PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($74.99 @ Newegg)
Optical Drive: Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer ($16.97 @ Outlet PC)
Total: $965.88
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

I couldn't find the Thermalright True 120M on there... save $20 by using that. http://www.amazon.com/Spirit-specifically-Micro-tower-user/dp/B00A0EC0X6/

(Case is a placeholder and a price buffer.)

I'd try to get in a 64GB or 80GB SSD like the Crucial m4 or Samsung 830 for Intel rapid Storage (Cache that uses SSD to speed up Hard Drive).

edit: if you want reliable, then you want a good PSU , motherboard, + CPU cooler.

Windows 7 - home version prob all you need, most buy pro version but don't use it. They sell OEM Versions cheaper too ... or you can try student / upgrade pricing.

CPU Cooler : Cooler Master Seidon 120m is a placeholder for Macho 120 or Thermalright True 120M . You don't want a CLC water cooler if you can't maintain it.

Another option is the Logisys Gamer Storm for $34, http://www.amazon.com/Logisys-Gamer-Storm-Cooling-MC6002GS/dp/B007G6XX4G/

If you're open to AMD graphics cards you could get a HD7950 for that $270.

You left out the monitor. Otherwise looks good. A little overkill on the power supply, but at that price its a good deal and it leaves room for a little expansion.

Why do people always say overkill on a PSU if it 100-150w more than the system power can someone please explain this? Here is a good setup, its going to be hard to keep it at $1000.00 though, when you need everything included. you can hit that just with a video card monitor and motherboard.

This is what I came up with,

Could cut the graphics card down to a 660Ti to free up 75 bucks.

This is really nice, and caters to what you wanted I would change two things to be honest.

The Seasonic PSU is expensive for what it offers, go with a Rosewill CAPSTONE Series 650-M. It's Gold Certified, Modular, and on sale on Newegg for $75. Gives you great efficiency, organization, and expandability later on.

Second, I would change the case. No need for a mATX Case when you can get a nice Midtower for the same price. Which will have better cooling options and airflow. I'd opt for a COOLER MASTER Elite 430 which is on sale on Newegg for $39.99. Has tons of cooling options as well.

Yes i can have you ever heard of below 20% PSU load efficiency?

What happens when you have a PSU that is much lager then you systems needs is in ilde the PC will use so little of the PSU that if it goes below 20% use of the PSU the rated efficiency no longer counts as there is no industry standards that says that what level of efficiency the PSU have to have at those loads

So if you have a gold rated PSU you run at lets say 10% all the time the PSU will not be 80 plus gold efficient at that load it could be silver bronze or even lower like 75-70% efficient

Short version overkill PSU´s running in Ilde waste money and makes more heat
