Starting gaming PC for my son. What to use under $1000? - Page 4

OK, I've made my first picks. Went over budget by $335!

So, can any changes be made to either improve on the components here or keep them comparable but lower the price to $1000 or under?

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/NXwU

Thanks!

That PSU is a deathtrap do not buy it! its one of the worst PSU´s money can buy

Death to the Cooler Master GX it sucks

And the GIGABYTE GA-Z77X-D3H is 5 $ US more and a better motherboard

Well I'd say a keyboard priced at $114 for a 14 year old is not really the right choice there. I would go for a cheaper keyboard and get a better mouse + mousepad since he's playing those games. Go for G400 from Logitech (it's not as pretty but it has flawless sensor) and perhaps Razer Goliathus mousepad. Trust me he's gonna appreciate that.

Edit: Also instead WD Black you can save some money on buying Barracuda 7200.14 from Seagate.

Changed the mouse.
Changed to Barracuda.
What gaming keyboard?
What PSU?

Also, I had originally planend on the Gigabyte Z77-UP4 TH until it was mentioned that ASRock z77 extreme4 was easy to OC. How does the Z77-UP4 TH compare to the GA-Z77X-D3H?

The Cooler Master GX 650W you picked is a deathtrap and you dont need more then 550 watts max for a PC with a single video card

Pick a 550 watts from the list http://www.overclock.net/t/183810/faq-recommended-power-supplies

I don't know much about PSU's but take a look at "OCZ ZT 550W" from what I've heard it's pretty good but since I don't have any experience with PSU's whatsoever I'm not gonna help you there. As for the keyboard take a look at the Razer Arctosa or something from ROCCAT. Good luck.

Made some changes.

I lowered the price of the SSD by going to 64gb from 128. I don't know about the SSD I chose. Seemed highly rated.
Switched out the PSU.
Changed the Keyboard and Mouse.
Down to $1163 but that is with rebates. I don't know if they will be there when I'm ready.

this system is pretty close to what i have.
7950 gives more power for less money than nvidia
the i7-3770k is easy enough to overclock that not much work is needed to get it up to 4.5 or higher. also if his graphics card ever dies, he'll have the onboard back up till replaced wink.gif

this list is pretty good. I would change it to the 3570k which is $219 atm frees up a little over $100 to add to something else. Maybe buy him a mouse like a Deathadder or g400. A regular keyboard should be good for him and if he wants a "gaming" keyboard you should let him save up some allowance to buy it himself. Also the ASUS GTX660 is 168.99 aMIR on newegg. Just change the other items to what you prefer. Also where will you be buying from?!

The Barracuda you've got there is pretty fast on it's own. I know it can't be compared to SSD but still. Do you really need (or your son) an SSD? Think about it.
