I have been out of the loop for awhile now and

Hey Roger! wave2.gif

I'm not 100% up to date on how AMD vs. Intel is doing in CPU performance, but I'll try and give you what info I can. I think right now that Intel is still ahead in terms of maximum performance with things like the i7 3770k but in terms of performance per dollar AMD might be doing better with the FX-8350. Intel is about to release a new series of CPU with the 4000 haswell series soon (others may know the exact date) which will likely bring ~10% better performance than current intel CPUs at pretty much the same prices.

I think my personal preference is for intel so if I were you I would probably choose between getting a deal on a 3770k now (microcenter has a great price on them if you have one locally) or waiting for the 4770k to come soon and then get that. As far as motherboards go I like Asus boards but Asrock generally seems to offer a whole lot of bang for the buck. Hopefully others will chime in with more specific boards to look at or which CPU brand is better at what tasks etc.

Good to see you again. smile.gif

This is what I would recommend for the core of your system:

Intel Core i5-3570K $220 @ Newegg
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD3H $140 @ Newegg

If you wait until June, the new "Haswell" CPUs from Intel will come out, along with new motherboards for the updated Socket 1150. At that point, the corresponding models will be i5-4670K and GA-Z87X-UD3H.
