AMD Phenom x4 640 3.0ghz overclocked

Alright, I'm 100% new to overclocking and I have no idea what i'm doing. I've been doing research and have seen people get up to 3.6ghz. I'm hoping to get it to around 3.5ghz. If you can teach me what everything I'd be really appreciated. I'm just an average computer user trying to go more in depth haha.

Thanks,
Michael

here's a guide from overclock.net

because your cpu is multiplier locked, you'll need to overclock with the front side bus.
cpu multiplier * front side bus = cpu frequency. eg. 205*16=3.2ghz

overclocking isn't just about your cpu though,
list which motherboard, ram, power supply, and any other components that make up your computer.

look at your motherboard on this list

I wouldn't overclock with that board.

that being said, that chip shouldn't have trouble reaching 3.6ghz.

MSI has a low end VRM setup which restricts the motherboard to overclock the cpu get a 78LMT-USB3 @ 60$ for the cheapest with which you can overclock to like 3.6Ghz i had my Athlon II X4 640 at 3.6 @ 1.55v with a 78LMT-S2P rev 3.0 and it ran smooth and ya i even used it for 24/7 folding no damage done wink.gif so 78LMT-USB3 will do the thing for sure
Hope that helped thumb.gif

Alright, I was working with the overclock and ran the prime 95. My temps got to around 80c before I shut them off. My gpu was cool as was everything else. I'm able to run a nice stable OC at 3270.17 Mhz.

According to CPU-Z

Core Speed 3270 MHz
Multiplier x 15.0
Bus Speed: 218.0 MHz
HT Link 2180.2 Mhz
Core voltage 1.320 V

^Thats currently running at 58c (While running WoW)

80*c is way high for an AMD chip.

more importantly watch your motherboard tempts. on the upside your stock cooler helps to cool your vrms, but still that motherboard is known for going up I'm smoke, and that always has the potential to take other parts with it.

Your temps are too high. I take it you are using the stock processor cooler. You should be able to reach 3.3 GHz no problem on stock voltage and cooling. Any higher though and you need extra volts and better cooling. You can get yourself a Hyper 212 EVO on the cheap and it kept my 3.8GHz Athlon 2 at 45C under heavy Prime 95 load. What program are you using to measure CPU temp because your CPU you should shut down at 71C as that's the thermal limit for Athlon 2
