MPower vs Maximus V GENE vs GIGABYTE UD5H/UP4 - Page 2

I eliminated audio codec out of my decision because like I said, I'll get a DAC. ALC898 has higher SNR for both recording and playback, but the quality also depends on manufacturer's implementation (shielding, placement, and etc.). It's hard to say which is better.

That's a weird way of setting offset. If I understand his method correctly, he basically lets the board to decide how much voltage the CPU needs, and uses low LLC levels to cut the extra. The bad side is that if LLC bugs out by any chance, the board will send a high amount of voltage.

That's probably won't happen if MSI took care of it properly, but I'm pretty much sure that this wasn't designed to work this way smile.gif.

Is there a chance that the llc bugs out and sends a high amount of voltage? And if that happens, what are the things that could happen?
Instantaneous spikes of temps, and if it happens often enough, the CPU will degrade faster due to those high voltages.

I haven't worked with MSI boards, so I'm not sure how good LLC is on their boards, but it's probably more than decent, so it shouldn't happen.

Don't worry about that. smile.gif

The only downside to MPower is the lack of real offset. While you can use mentioned LLC option to achieve a negative offset (if auto sets more than your chip needs), you don't have the ability to set a positive offset (meaning more than voltage set by auto).

So - if the auto voltage is not enough for the multiplier you set ("bad" chip/higher overclocks), the only other way is fixed voltage.

Otherwise, I think it's a great board, based on what I've heard and seen.

I wouldn't get MSI because I don't need WiFi on a desktop PC, and that's the only advantage of MSI board over Gigabyte ones. UP4 has Thunderbolt, and I rather have that which I'll probably use in one way or the other. In other words disadvantage of having analog VRM, and no offset support overweights WiFi in my case.

As you can see it's a personal decision. Just eliminate on basis of your needs. All these boards are good in their own way.
Does the difference between the VRMs or components of the UP4 and UD5H a big thing? Is it worth to get the UP4 over the UD5H because of the newer and better components and ultra durable 5? How about components and VRM, PWMs between UP4 vs MSi MPower?

UP4 is slightly better, and I keep hearing that people get same OCs with less volts on UP4. Whether it worth it or not is up to you. They offer different features. UP4 brings Thunderbolt, and UD5H has more SATA ports, better audio, onboard buttons.

VRM: MPower=UD5H (more or less) < UP4.
