While it wouldn't be anything like a nuclear bomb falling and exploding, it could have grounded the practice for good... maybe by waiting we have a better chance to do it permanently.

I'm sure there would have been some form of accident eventually, just like with everything else, which is why they restricted the above ground testing. With enough insight (testing) and safety/regulation, even during accidents the liability would have been worth it. Nuclear power has been around for many decades, and the only time (aside from Japan) there has been any real problem was Chernobyl, which was 100% avoidable. Such negligence would never be allowed for public projects.

I'm sure I could easily be wrong, they could have just started taping the things together, but in the article they go from unstable rumbling death machines to stable reliable rockets in a matter of a couple decades. The safety would have improved, not deteriorated.

Anyone with a bit of macroecon knowledge would tell you that they go hand in hand.

So do GPUs and PCI-E slots, but when we are talking about faster GPUs, people hardly bring up the bandwidth of the current PCI-E slots, especially when they have no bottle neck. It would take time for it to translate, as far as the funding would go. It wouldn't be a quick influx of cash, and often doesn't pay off for years of research. It is a low risk investment, but with a very long yield period.

Cool stuff. I was always wondering when NASA would go to the warehouse, flip up the switch and dust of the ole' NTRs. Hopefully, their use and safe launches will convince the ignorant masses that nuclear power is safe and reliable, if you stay in the guidelines. Maybe we can start building LFTR power-plants like we should have been for the last two decades.

NASA is single-handedly the greatest institution ever formed by man. NASA's budget is peanuts compared the rest of the government and there is not a single logical reason to cut their budget any further. If you kill the need for innovation, it will harm economic growth. Not to mention mankind needs something to dream towards and aspire too.

Maybe so, but I'll readily quote two men that are easily among the top 20 smartest humans in the world and I won't feel any shame in doing so. Also, the second video is Tyson directly addressing the House Sciences Committee and in the Kaku video, he's not even talking funding, he's just talking about a civilization transitioning and he points out that the longer we stay in a state where we have the ability to destroy ourselves, the more likely it is to happen.

At no point in human history has something ever been wrong because the masses disagreed with it. Truth is not a democracy.

As a non-Murican it's NASA that keeps any scrap of positivity for the behaviour of one of the most powerful countries on the planet....

Conservative estimated cost of wars in Afghanistan/Iraq: ~1,400,000,000,000.00
Conservative estimated cost of TARP and associated bank bailout measures: ~4,600,000,000,000.00
NASA budget request, 2013: 17,711,400,000.00

To put that in perspective:

The cost (to date) of the wars on being frightened could fund NASA for 79 years.
The cost (to date) of the gifts to wall street could fund NASA for 259 years.

And people would rather see NASA's budget trimmed? Where do they think money spent at NASA goes? Hint: not offshore or up a hooker's nose.

I think you forgot to mention aid to other countries. What is this bs??? The U.S. is the most powerful country in the world and yet we still hand out aid to other countries? I say we stop all aid to everyone, let NK choose their faith right now and end this bs with wars and focus on our country and beyond. If we actually focused on Nasa instead of wars, then we would have technology that is years ahead of anyone else. This will allow us to win dominance without having to go to war.

Edit: I guess I would have to become president one day in order to lead the U.S. in the right direction.

Considering we spent twice as much on aid to foreign countries as we did on NASA in 2011, I guess you could dial down the wars and bailouts and fund both of them. Or, ****post in ignorance.

If they're anything like the nuclear rockets in Kerbal Space Program they are going to be terrible lol

However I know they won't be like the nuclear rockets in Kerbal Space Program, otherwise NASA wouldn't bother with them tongue.gif

EDIT: What's up with all the "why don't they spend the money on helping Earth?"

NASA is privately funded, they aren't funded by the government. Instead of spending $1000 on a GPU, why don't you guys complaining send it to help out poorer countries?
