well the Moon base operations would need to be largely self sufficient. a very small crew with the rest being more like a Car assembly line.

major questions, location? Crew quarters would have to be Underground to help shield radiation. Power Source? not likely able to run on pure solar energy.

Nuclear? Question of how to cool the reactors, space might be cold, but a warm object doesn't Lose that heat quickly. Maybe some sort of Underground cooling system, expel the heat into the Moon with a Radiator system of sorts.. im just spitballing random ideas at this point, NO idea what would legitimately work.

Also, Im not so sure I would want us to be involved with Minding or Removing material from the moon. I know in the beginning it wouldn't sund like much, but you would effectively be reducing the moons Mass, no clue what sort of issues that could cause on earth.

A lunar factory would likely just cover the majority of the far side with solar panels and have ample power to do what it needs. As for a small crew, a lunar factory wouldn't be used primarily for small spacecraft. It'd likely require a 100+ person crew because the entire point of a lunar factory would be large ships that would never be able to enter/exit an atmosphere.

A solar power farm in space is much more effecient than anything we could hope to build on the Earth. Why? The Earth itself. Also, space is not cold. A vacume does not have temperature as you need to have exsistence to be a value of temperature. I'm not trying to troll, as space is foreign concept for most of us to understand seeing as we having nothing close to it here on Earth.

And a vacuum is the best insulation known of. A hot rock in space would be hot for a long time. Cooling would be a problem, but I am sure we could soak a bunch of heat into the moon. I am sure we could get a nuclear reactor going there with current tech.

though all of this is a pipe dream...no way will any of this get funded. If it happen it will happen from private companies. Like I said though...if a base could be sustainable it might even be profitable.

yah I guess if they cover the parts the receive the most frequent sun light would make sense, I just dont know much about storing that energy, transporting that energy, since it will be very important to keep the Facility where the crew will be, away from that solar radiation.

completely unsure of the distances we would be talking about here.

Also I think the Moon outpost to be used to fabricate things outside of earth atmosphere would be best to start off small. Firstly we would need a much better way to get the materials to the moon, which right now would be pointless.

Space Elevator is really the only choice we have to get the materials onto the moon in a cost effective manner. Again, since I don't necessarily like the idea of mining the moon for these resources, the only other option would be long term ion propulsion probe missions to "Wrangle" asteroids and keep them "local" to where the moon is, mining asteroid would be a lucrative business il bet.

Another Idea ive had for a long time now would be to take an asteroid like Apothis, not only mine it for materials, but actually use it as our "space ship" one that would be able to hold and house a large population.

the major issues would be how to pilot it, turn it, move it etc. etc. might be flat out impossible but one fantastic idea lol

I can think of stuff, but I don't have hte knowledge to prove right or wrong

Also, you will eventually give off your heat over time, just takes a long time. but its all dependent on the amount of sunlight the object takes directly if in our solar system, but eventually given the right circumstance there, The Hot object will eventually radiate its energy out and cool down. Most likely not exceeding 4K

NASA is privately funded, they aren't funded by the government. Instead of spending $1000 on a GPU, why don't you guys complaining send it to help out poorer countries?

The nuclear rockets in Kerbal are awesome for interplanetary travel. You could go to multiple planets with a single tank. They're pretty bad in an atmosphere though, but thats where aerospikes/mainsales come into play.

Yeah. I mean you could essentially cool the a heat system by transfering it to the planet, but I'm not really sure how all that would work. Probably be very similar to the loops we have on our computers, just vastly different in scope. I personally think a moon base as a solar hub is a brilliant idea. You could send electricity to stations by microwaves to reduce cost on solar panel redundancy. It truly is amazing to think of all of the possibilities there are.
