New Comp, strange (subpar?) CPU performance

Thread Starter
So far, the only game I'm seeing abnormally low fps in is Starcraft 2, which is CPU limited. I've verified this to be the fact by the fact that my gpu never exceeds 60% load (660 ti) on full ultra 1920x1080, and it only gets that high very infrequently for a very short amount of time in burst. Usually its below 33%, and curiously enough, the more stuff there is on the map, the lower this utilization goes. By the time the game gets to late game with gigantic armies on both sides, the utilization is down to 11%.

The processor I'm running is a 3570k. Currently it's at stock, was trying it out before heading over to OC it (Computer first turned on yesterday). At the very start of the game (almost nothing on the map), testing over 90 second in fraps, the framerate swings wildly from 110 down to 45 then back up to 110 multiple times. This is with the unit preloader having been run already, for those who are familiar with Sc2's infamous caching lag.

By the time I get to late game, if I stare at a battle I'm getting 15-20s fps. My friend on a 3770 (non K) with a 660ti and same motherboard (Asus z8p77-v lx) gets mid 30s in these exact moments (we watch a replay together and compare our live fps), and then the fps jumps back up to 50s-60 after the battle is over. I however stay low in the 30s for an extended period of time after the battle is over, with an extremely lethargic bounce back up.

It's not thermals I don't think because my CPU is maxing out at 49 C while running SC2. GPU maxes out at 75 some games, usually below 70 C max.

Furthermore, I often get skype typing lag when I'm in game, and various other forms of input or output lag on occasions which really throw me off, although I don't know if it is the CPU. What I do know is I've never had stutters like this, under the exact same running processes profile, exact same resolution, same type of hard drive (7200 rpm), same resolution, except my laptop has an i7-2630qm instead of an i5-3570k, has 8gb of 1333mhz vs 8gb of 1600mhz ram on desktop, has a 460m rather than a 660ti, and has Windows 7 instead of Windows 8.

So something definitely feels wrong, and yet benchmarking my cpu gives it a higher than average score for the 3570k. Is there anything I should be worried about, that could signify some sort of problem with my system? The incredible fps swings that take place over the course of 5-8 seconds really had been weirded out, and so are the extremely low fps drops in late game.

No it's not power settings in Windows, I made sure of that. Yes graphics drivers are at the most up to date.

I would check the RAM and make sure that it runs smooth and in dual channel. And I would check and reseat my GPU AND reinstall the drivers.

Hmm how would you go about checking the ram? Ran some RAM benchmarks and they all came up pretty high. Done that for the GPU already.

Install CPU-Z, in the memory tab on the upper right side it says what mode (ganged or unganged) and what channel your RAM is set to run. Do you have any GPU OC programs installed?

No, although my GPU is an EVGA 660ti SC, so it is naturally overclocked.

*** why is my dram frequency 816 mhz when I have 1600 mhz ram. #EDIT - nvm multply x2 haha. But yea, there's my memory window in CPU-Z.

Because DDR stands for Double Data Rate. 816x2=1632MHz. Your RAM is fine and runs as it should. Could you please upload a pic of your CPU-z in the CPU tab?

Edit. Could you give me your Power supply model?
And please use this to build a rig with your specs and add it to your sig so that we can help you better

The GPU utilization is to be expected. As your CPU is unable to push enough frames, your GPU has no work to do. The big difference between your friend's 3770 & your chip is odd though. You should be getting roughly the same FPS with the same replay (30 fps sounds about right for big battles).

It really does sound like something is wrong somewhere, probably CPU. It's a pain in the ass to swtich CPUs between systems, but you could switch video cards with your friend (or easier still, just take yours out and run the replay with integrated graphics & shaders set to off). If you're getting the same minimum fps during the worst parts (where it goes down to 15-20), you'd know the GPU doesn't have anything to do with it.

I suppose there's the off chance you got a dud CPU somehow. But that seems really weird.

My CPU-Z

I OC'd it, and as expected it's getting more fps now than my friend. However, I'm still getting those fps drops, although now it's to the high 20s, boost is a result of OC'ing I guess. It definitely feels a lot more consistent though with the OC compared to before. I can't really swap out cpu's since my friend lives about 15 hours away haha.

It's really odd, everything is great and fine except for the hiccups, although it's definitely completely passable now that it's OC'd. I updated the nvidia driver to the latest one as well, 314.22 WHQL. Is the voltage I'm having to run about normal for an OC of my level? Temps are perfectly fine, I don't even break 60 in game, ever. Usually I don't even break 55.

Set vCore to 1.3 - then multi to 4.5, work your way down in vCore, 4.5 iis the sweatspot for gaming, give it a try. Download Super Pi and do the 1mb run twice, 1 at stock and 1 at 4.5 and post the results.
