50C Idle with 9500?! Help!!

Thread Starter
Buddy and I are putting together a core 2 duo rig for him and we're getting REALLY high (what seems high to me at least) temperatures.

We put the zalman 9500 on a 6300 c2d with an asus p5b-e mobo. In bios we were reading temps around 50C. We reseated tried again with same results.

We tried the stock fan and we had 80C temps .

Flashed the bios and reinstalled the zalman. Same temps (50C). There is NO overclock on this yet. What temps should we be seeing?

Please help,

BRISK

SOLUTION:
The ASUS P5B-E gives false temperature readings in the BIOS for Core 2 Duo chips! After installing windows and using MBM5 it read 27C. With a temperature probe the base of the heatsink (not between the HS and IHS) it read 23C (ambient temp).

Just to further explain. We have the sides off on the case and a 120mm exhaust fan pulling the hot air out.

Please help.

EDIT: Also this is pre-windows. Just installed all components and we peeked in the bios and this is what we get.

even though the bio's is probably right I'd verfy it with speed fan. At those temps you should be able to touch the sink in feel the heat. Anyways, try re-seating the cooler and use only a dot of as5. To much as5 isn't a good thing so keep that in mind. Also it takes almost 100 hours for it to cure. If that doesn't work maybe try lowering the core voltage.

remember...under the BIOS, the CPU is under 80% load

this is true.

so, another reason to run speedfan on it.
also prime95 and check the load temp compaired to the bios temp

We used very small amounts of AS5. "Grain of rice sized" just like always. Also even with the curing time it should only cut of 1-2 C, nothing huge like 10-20C. I thought idle temps were around 30-40C, aren't they? The core voltage is at 1.2something that's the automatic stock voltage I thought. (I didn't change it to or from anything that's just what it was at.)

The 80+C with the stock cooler freaked me out. I mean this is just BIOS loading! I'm thinking it's the motherboard. Either it's reading the wrong temperature or it's putting way too much current through the chip. Either case that's a quick way for an RMA!

Also wouldn't the BIOS give the same accuracy as in-windows software, they're using the same probe aren't they?

~BRISK

(Thanks for your help REP!)

EDIT: 80% LOAD! What is it doing? Still aren't those temps high for load even. I mean there's no OC on it yet!

well I'm thinkin but at the moment I don't have a solution until someone with the same chip comes along and sheds some light on what the temps should be. The only intel chip i have is in a older sony and my temps are high as well. Its a single core but its hitting 55Cidle and 59C load with the stock sink.

Can someone please post their 6300 temps (without an overclock)?

What is your ambient. Do you live in FL or something? Temps seem very high to me. I am running E6600 at 3.6 and loads are 55 with a warm room. (but I am on water cooling)
