Where to go from here.... - Page 2

very much in the same situation as the OP.

1GB vram limits some of the eye candy for me at 1920x1200 with Ultra graphic detail [5850 CF].
You would have to upgrade to something like the 7870 XT (Tahiti LE)
based cards and overclock it to match a pair of 6870. Around the $209+
when newegg has the PowerColor Myst edition on sale.

Upgrading my x4 3.7GHz to x6 4.0GHz helped a lot in games like BF3.

I would suggest the FX-6300 for $130 @TigerDirect.

or

AMD FX-8320 125W, 8 core, 3.5GHz - $169.99 @TigerDirect
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4904560&CatId=7339

I would pick up the FX-6300 overclock it to 4.5-4.7GHz and get two cheap CLC with Dwood brackets and
overclock the crap out of those Asus HD6870. Even at 4.5GHz the FX-4100 won't keep up with your crossfire setup.

Nice build. like all the components your picked. well except the 4100.

I am running at 2560x1440 resolution. Unfortunately I haven't been able to go over 985mhz on my cards. Not due to heat but the locked voltages on it. The FX 4100 happened by accident by being misinformed from a sales associate at my local Fry's and not knowing any better. Long story short the guy said my CPU, phenom x4 940 at the time, would fit on my sig rig board. It didn't. I broke a pin and well had to settle on the fx4100 due to limited funds and no phenoms in stock. Since then I have learned to do research and is also why I hang out here!thumb.gif

Your choices are either a 6300 or a 8320, or get a 7850 or 7870 if you can go slightly over. If you go the CPU then you can sell the other one for 70 bucks if you go the GPU way then selling both for 200 depending if you want to sit on them for awhile.

yeah i noticed that when i overclocked my 4100 i get better performance out of my 7850 and a better score in unigine valley, idk if it's because of the phys-x or just the added 1ghz but i upgrade 600 points in valley from the 1ghz overclock. it's kind of a hard choice to upgrade but seeing how your 6850's aren't exactly "old" then a 6300 is a better choice if you can afford it the 8320 would probably land you a few more years een though i'm not too sure about programs using it to it's full potential..

you can get the 8 core 8320 for $174 : ) if you want to go that deep into your budget but overclocking would need a h100i to keep up with 4.6-4.8ghz
