I'm surprised nobody has definitively cleared this up yet. You CAN NOT SLI with cards with different frame buffer sizes. Period. Sorry... redface.gif

In my experience, you can't link two Nvidia cards together if they have different Vram allocations. I tried it with two 9800GTs back in the day. Never got it working at all. frown.gif

If you decide to try SLI again in the future, I would recommend buying the exact model of the card you already have. I've always had the best luck that way.

How did a GTX 570 1.2gb and a GTX 480 1.5gb sli together then? I linked a thread earlier:

People HAVE SLI'ed two of the same cards with different vram together. They just had to do something I think to have less mem seen from one of the cards or something to that extent, but yes it has been done.

Apparently it's with using a registry hack called Coolbits, but I don't think it works with GTX 580s. After a bit of research everyone seems to say that it does not work with 580s and from my experience, unless I did something wrong, it does not work properly; it causes system instability, and games, or any full screen application, are completely unplayable.

I posted on NVIDIA's Geforce Forums for them to basically tell me that it is not possible to SLI these cards and that they do not support the use of CoolBits. So I was wondering if anyone had any experience with CoolBits could tell me how I could get it to work properly for me if at all possible. Any other ideas on how to enable SLI with my cards would also be greatly appreciated.

A question I also asked on the NVIDIA Forum but have yet to get an answer, would having the main monitor plugged into HDMI on the main card with the second monitor on DVI on the main card cause these instability issues I'm seeing? Should they both be on DVI?

My advice would be to sell the 1GB card and get another identical one to the 3GB one.

It would remove the need for dodgy registry hacks and provide the most stable system.

I would like if at all possible to not to have to go through the hassle of doing this. TBH if I can't get SLI to work I will just keep both cards, use the 3 GB as main and 1.5 GB for PhysX/ folding. My 1.5 GB was my original card and has a Lifetime Warranty in case it ever broke, the 3 GB I had given to me and I do not have anything for warranty, if it even has a warranty left. I would like to keep the card that has the warranty.
