Just beat Bioshock Infinite...am I the only one on the planet that thinks its over-hyped?

The beginning of the game is so promising before the middle part which is basically the same thing over and over again hours on end (kill, kill, kill) and then the ending, while decent, is nothing I feel is that special.

Over all I came out of the game thinking that the story was so-so, all the characters besides Elizabeth we pretty generic and uninspiring, and the game play was severely lacking (way too generic, was too on the rails, no puzzles or anything like that just kill, kill, kill).

I'm looking at metacritic and all the 9's and 10's and I just don't get it. The first Bioshock was infinitely better...more interesting characters and enemies, better game play and mechanics, more dynamic environment, etc...

Am I alone here? Did the hype train drive past me? Am I insane or play a different game than everyone else? I just simply don't get why people feel this is the second coming.

I feel exactly the same, while not a bad game per se, the first one was just better in every aspect (except the obvious ones).

I thoroughly enjoyed it, BUT... I thought that there was a bit much shooting, you even have to shoot a ghost?!?!confused.gif How do bullets hurt a ghost? I also thought that the story was really really short. One minute I am trying to find a gunsmith next minute my world is flipped and it got really fast paced after that.

Intentionally vague post

Yeah, I didn't even pay attention to the hype for this game, loved the game, but yes it was overhyped, its like the newest killzone thats coming out, its going to fail, just how fast.

One thing though was I rarely found myself using the vigor powers. The vigors were disappointing to me. That and the game was really short.

Did you take the time to listen to the story or did you just run through and kill kill kill? There is more to the story than Robert Lutece hiring Booker to rescue Elizabeth. There is more to "give us the girl and wipe away the debt." The ending is very mind boggling. Why do you think the game has "Infinite" in the title?

EDIT: I just found out Jennifer Hale was the voice of Rosalind Lutece!

Oh yeah I took my time. I listened to a ton of the phonograph things and all that. I definitely went into the game with high hopes and took my time with the game. My lack of amazement for this game certainly doesn't come from a lack of trying.

I just think that, in the end looking back on it, the years they worked on the game seemed to have brought little else to the table other than a generic shooter with a decent (not great by any means but good for video game standards) story and little else.

I feel like they took all the things that made Bioshock 1 good and threw them in the garbage but forgot to replace those things with better ideas. They didn't remove "1" and then add a better "1" they just kept it at "0".

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the game doesn't have its qualities, I definitely don't think it was a waste of time or anything. It's just in the end I found nothing spectacular about it. If I had to rate it on a scale of 0 to 10 the best I could imagine myself giving it is a 5 or 6. It simply isn't any better than that in my eyes.

felt the same thing , it shocked me how the graphics looks at the beginning then and gave me a feeling it's gonna have open world elements but it didn't , it was like setting on a train driving you around to see cinematic sights of statues with sun-rays shining from behind it , the boss fights were boring and easy , can't say the game is bad but my hopes for a masterpiece were crushed 2 hours in the game

Yeah my thoughts EXACTLY. The game starts with such promise. Massive floating buildings, vast vistas and scenery, then you get the sky hook and go on big ass rides on the rails and stuff. Then you reach like 2 hours into the game and it seems like the developers forgot about all this. Gone are the feelings of vastness and wonderment. Gone of the feelings of an open environment. It becomes then a basic just game.

I think this game is about the art. I was pretty bored with it at times along the way, but when I got to the end, I was blown away. Sure, it's on rails a lot, not an open world, a little repetitive, etc. But the visuals (not the graphics, the overall design) and the story were better than anything I've played in at least a year.

I haven't finished yet, but it is too much of a shooter and I think the rails mechanic is underused. Another mechanic that is underutilized is the tears, would of been great if they got creative with it as a way to introduce side quests and such.
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The twins Robert and Rosalind Lutece were the ones rowing your boat at the beginning.
