[CNN] Game of Thrones premiere sets piracy record - Page 2

TorrentFreak is a torrent news site. They report on news related to torrents and file sharing in general... I would say a "piracy record" is pretty much required reporting from them tongue.gif.

It's not too hard to see why it's so pirated though. HBO is a premium channel, so many people don't have it.

[edit] And before anyone says something, TF is CNN's source. They just post anything they think people will click on (that they think is reasonably reliable, hopefully), thus this article tongue.gif.

Ok. So why is CNN picking it up?

There's a record?

HBO--and all other content providers-- if you really want to get rid of piracy, try offering your product in a way that modern consumers will actually purchase it.

Sell me Game of Thrones episodes for $5 a piece online. I said SELL, not RENT. I would purchase every single one from you. I'm not buying some stupid BD or DVD collection -- for hundreds of dollars -- a year after the season is over. That business model is outdated and unrealistic. I'm also not subscribing to your ridiculously overpriced channel just for one series.

This is not to say that I pirated or will pirate anything. But somebody in charge of these networks needs to remove their heads from their backyards and figure out what their market WANTS.

What do they possibly have to be upset about?

They are making pretty much the most popular TV show ever. Just goes to show how good a job they are doing with the series.

I reckon most of the downloads would have been overseas than from the states. In places where it isn't easily accessible. They should have their own website with a season subscription and people could stream the episodes same time they air. Would stop most of the piracy.

Actually, didn't one of the top producers or director of GoT say they loved the free advertising of the piracy because it increased the hype for the show and caused more subscriptions?

I get why there are issues with the downloading of movies and music as there is a cost associated with viewing or owning them.

TV shows though? I have a PVR (several actually) and routinely record shows (such as game of thrones) for later viewing. Since there is no cost associated with watching a tv show (other than the subscription cost for the given network), I fail to see why producers would care if it were downloaded.

I don't endorse any kind of piracy, I just have trouble understanding how a show that is not PPV, a movie or music in content can actually be pirated. Maybe the networks would have an issue with it, but the producers?

Everyone pirating probably doesn't have HBO, and thus HBO doesn't get that money. I'm not sure the exact licencing agreement each cable provider makes with HBO, but I would bet number of subscriptions plays a big role in it. If you already have HBO, you would just use HBO Go or your DVR, and not bother with piracy.

HBO can have it any way they want it. I wouldn't doubt it if their subscription model with the pirating is still more profitable than the a la carte method.

In fact, it probably is.
