[CNN] Game of Thrones premiere sets piracy record - Page 19

No, it is that simple. The evil Engulf and Devour corporation makes money from a lot of things, but George R.R. and the folks who write the scripts only get paid when the devil corporation sees eyeballs on the screen, and that pay is commensurate with the eyeball numbers - the official numbers. If you really know folks in the industry, they'll tell you that.

In other media, like music, copyrights aren't transferred like they used to be - most of the people who make music worth listening to retain most or all of their rights (see e.g. Matador's artist list), and when you get that stuff from the fat guy's site, you're stealing from them - taking food off of their plates.

A lot of artists have adapted to The New Way - they give some stuff out, and they charge for some stuff. Do 'em a favor, if you like the freebies. Show some support.

I'm no fan of Sony et al. But if Sony et al. aren't the ones who rely on legit views for their income - or if they're not even a part of the equation, holding little or no copyright control over the material - that doesn't really matter, does it?

But whatev. We all make choices.

Including the artist. To back their work with Engulf and Devour, apparently.

This works so much better when you actually read the post you're commenting on.

btw Matador (for example) doesn't have any relationship with any of the entities whose involvement you appear to use as an excuse to steal content; nor do a number of the film makers and distributors whom you might see on (for instance) IFC or The Sundance Channel. Then again, you may not be interested in that content...

DUDE... We're talking about HBO.

What's really crazy is how you say I say things I didn't, when both our quotes are right there.

And what was it you said that negates my statement about artists choosing their venue?

As I said in my post, tehy already do this. Unfortunately, not in the USA. If youre in Europe you can possibly get it. In the USA? No shot.

@Complaints about HBOGO quality:

Best streaming service ever. Hands down. I use it more than netflix. EVERY EPISODE OF EVERY SHOW THEY HAVE EVER DONE, is on HBOGO. It is also 720p+ content, with 5.1 surround sound on most episodes (the ones that have it at any rate). This is all accessible via iphone, ipad, xbox, ps3, pc, etc and is free if you are an HBO subscriber.

@Complaints about cost:

Do you like ads? Oh you do? Then HBO isn't for you! Would you rather PAY a monthly fee for GOOD shows/movies and get no ads? HBO is for you!

Wanna know why i get netflix/hbo? I like what they offer, and i LOVE that they have no ads. Stuff that isn't bogged down with ads is usually a higher quality. Why? Because they NEED you to want to pay for it.

Its either free with ads, or costs $. People cannot have it both ways.

In case y'all cant tell, I love HBO. No ads, good movies, amazing shows? As a tv/film buff, its basically my wet dream. I'm looking forward to Netflix challenging them. They already started to with House of Cards (another epic show if people haven't seen it yet).

Well, yeah. They can. It's called piracy.

This is the problem. HBO, and other rights holders need to compete with free and no ads. A lot of companies seem to think that they don't have to compete with taht base don principal... and they lose big time because no matter what they think morals dictate, the fact of the matter is that people piracy, and get good quality recordings for free.

I'm not even saying pirating a television show makes you an awful person or acting high and mighty about the whole thing I'm just saying it's an awful excuse. The exact same thing happens when content from other countries makes it here(which obviously is rarely since most of it is created here but you get the point).

It's not even ilegal in my country, AND it comes some time late, AND it doesn't come in original version AND I have to pay for it (the only pro being that I'd be supporting the studio.. but I can do so buying merchandise, and through other means). Nobody has ever been prosecuted here for downloading anything on the internet (unless you make money off of it, of course).

The fact of the matter is that companies should work with the law in their hands, and not against it. The same can be said about DRM on plenty of other content: why should I bother to pay, when I'm buying a bugged product, that might not even work, and that has a stupid DRM feature on it that the internet version hasn't... and that has to be paid for? Do you understand how incentives work?

Yes, studios need to get their money back, but I'm not stupid. In the US and some other countries you risk a lot by downloading stuff from the internet... but, on some other countries, you simply don't. You need to factor all the pro's and con's there are: I'm willing to pay for everything I use, but I'm not when I have free alternatives AND the paying version is actually WORSE than the free one (oh, the irony!). Heck, my brother bought Xcom: enemy unkown and every now and then the game randomly crahses, now what? It happens to me with several games (all the games I play are original) that I own... that sometimes they don't want to work (related to TAGES and some other DRM crap). What do I do when I can't play a product I paid for?

Some people think that everything is black or white, that "you are a thieve that steals from others" (to be precise, nothing is actually stolen, though) when we are the ones being robbed many times. If I pay for a drill, and it doesn't work.. I go to the shop, and they will give me another one. If I get tired of it, I can sell it... on the other hand, If I buy a game and it doesn't work... I have to swallow it, and should I wanted to sell it, I wouldn't be able to. Talk about things being fair.

If you read the comments on that page, you will see someone mentioning that he and several others subscribed to HBO for this show only and will then cancel their subscriptions the day the season ends. It seems Game of Thrones has, as the article states, "eclipsed" everything else on their channel.

totally agree!!!! I would gladly pay a dollar an episode to stream it from HBO. they have no other shows besides Boardwalk Empire that I would be willing to pay 120 a year to see! I pay for HBO ONLY for Game of Thrones, and yes, I am one of those who cancels when it ends! The constant whining about piracy is getting old for me! Hollywood cranks out so much useless, mindless garbage and they are definitely not going to be homeless anytime soon! I took my kid to see a movie a while back and it cost me about 70 bucks for 2 hours of entertainment! The MPAA is just another private Gang of Lawyer scum and they should all get real jobs and work for a living like the rest of us! Game of Thrones is one of the best adaptations I've seen in a long time and they deserve to get compensated for it. I read the books years back and I have no problems paying to see each episode...

I'm just wondering how you plan on creating shows that cost millions of dollars per episode and making them free and without ads? And keeping the quality up to what PEOPLE (ie MYSELF) are willing to pay for it?

Don't think you've thought of something they haven't. They know all of this. Once again: they are still making $. Lots of it. Enough to continue producing the most expensive show in history thus far (trumps Rome, the previously most expensive show per episode ever made, which was also an HBO product!).

Over 30 million people subscribe to HBO. They're doing something right. That something? Providing good, quality programs that people WANT to watch. Myself included.

I dont really get your point. How does this prove the "evil-ness"? If anything they're trending towards netflix, and will probably offer some sort of online only service for solely their original content.

HBO is amazing. Sorry you guys don't agree with how they price their content, but you don't have to watch it. If you want to see them fail, it means you want to be stuck with mostly crappy shows and very few good ones.

A big point though is that, even if you do pirate it, HBO is still making $ off the show. So go ahead, the more people that see game of thrones, the more money HBO will end up with anyway. THE MOST PIRATED SHOW IN HISTORY and they're churning out multi million dollar episodes, and have a deal inked for several more seasons? You think they'd be doing that if they were losing money? Of course not. Rome started losing them money, and they gave it the ax after two seasons.

Thievery isn't hurting them as much as you believe. They figured it out. Once again, HBO knows what the heck they're doing.
