Need some info for a friends laptop.

Thread Starter

A good friend of mine recently ordered a charger for his laptop a Toshiba Satellite A205-S4617 PSAF3U-0PD00V With the Pentium and 2 GB of ddr2 Ram.

Im trying to find the best possible CPU upgrade for him that wont break the bank around 20-30 Dollars would be nice . He's Currently using the stock 1.6 so even something around 2.0 or above would be great.

So far Ive found the pentium is a 533FSB and Socket P. Im not sure but If i remember correctly most 533 FSB will go up to 667 but usually nothing over. He just wants to spend a little amount of money to get it up and running again for things around the house , a new Laptop is not what he wants. Thanks in Advance.

I went down that same route with upgrading a older laptop. Working processors that SHOULD work with that socket that are designed for that chip set, won't post. They put something stupid in the BIOS that only allows a few certain processors that the manufacture offered to work with the laptop. I've also read stories online of others having the same problem.

So make sure you tell your friend that there is like a 50% chance that this CPU upgrade won't work. Older cheap laptops are notorious for doing this.

Well I upgraded My old Gateway from the stock 1.66 to 2.0 I would have liked to go farther but I was stuck at 800 FSB I beleive I need to look into upgrading another. A CPU and RAM would be like 25 total for him. SO no big deal.
