Certainly there are advantages to it, but in many ways, these types of initiatives skew the focus of research and eliminate research for the sake of research, from which the majority of great findings arise. The most important things we've ever discovered didn't necessarily come because we were looking for it, but rather by accident so to speak from a tangential target.

Case in point -- PCR as we know it, one of the most fundamental and necessary tools of molecular biology was made possible by the discovery of Taq pol... which was found because somebody felt like looking at deep sea thermophiles.

Big science is useful, but not when it comes at the cost of independent research, which it often does. The human genome project is another example; it's honestly been tremendously useful, but nowhere near what was predicted when the initiative began. And it probably wouldn't even be here were it not for the efforts of a particular J. Craig Venter, who basically single-handedly beat the government.

not directly the same thing, but close...

Most "best ideas!", or things that somebody came up with that eventually went on to become a billion dollar company, started with an idea that was written on a napkin. Nothing fancy.

And yet, I work in a Biochemistry Lab at a University which recently got a 300k grant from NIH. The Professor I work for is pursuing science for science sake, they gave him the grant because they were interested by his preliminary findings. So in this case it is promoting independent and free-thinking research.

Ok so maybe the first Direct Link abilities will be slower than this, but its still amazing.

Come on Storm, you know better than to feed the trololols.

And anyone who has ever seen Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D., Darker than Black, Claymore, Devil Man, Iria, etc etc should appreciate Anime. Jeesh

god I was Obsessed with Jubei Yagyuu, Vmap hunter and Iria long long ago when they used to play those on SciFi channel on Saturdays thumb.gif

Claymore is amazing Manga but the anime was great until they started changing things, and then that horrid ending...

Any Computer user should be able to appreciate Serial Experiments Lain, .Hack series, Accel World and Sword Art Online. Couldnt think of any other specifically Computer/Technology based Anime.

Reboot was great thumb.gif

But seriously, Im ready for neuronet computers

Ya they didnt even get halfway through Claymore. The ending wasnt really an ending... I also used to watch the Sci-Fi channel anime. I think thats what got me into it.

I'll have to check out some of the others you mentioned, not familiar with them.

OT: Neuronet computers would be super cool. I would be kinda worried about getiing a brain cyber virus... thinking.gif

Whole new world of Hacking at our doorstep

Serial Experiments Lain, .Hack series, Accel World and Sword Art Online?

Serial Experiments Lain is older, kind of a SciFi thriller, very interesting though

.Hack (many version of this though) is about a kid playing an MMO with a Neurolink Device, so you ARE the character in the game, you move you jump you sit, as if you were in real life. But this kid is stuck in the game and cant get out. it was pretty cool

Accell World is cool, about an underground secret game, that "slows down time" while in use. They find ways to exploit this, very interesting story.

Sword Art Online is about a Game much like the .Hack one, but the games developer screws all the players and makes it so they cant Log out.. VERY cool show, First half of the series was excellent.

lol. I like me some Anime thumb.gif

Whoa there buddy.
I have to disagree about only half of SAO being any good.
Sure ALO had too much fanservice (imo) but the storyline was just as good.
Although 24 episodes was far too little, they missed out so much character development in order to get the story into 25 episodes frown.gif

While I do agree you offer a valid point, the Internet, GPS, Speech translation, Stealth planes, etc. are all a result of said system.

i was just flat out disappointed with ALO

He comes in basically a hacked account with godlike abilities. Does practically nothing. there was like 2 cool parts. the final parts were good, but I didnt care for the "climb up" final quest thing,

what i really wanted was more time to be spent in the first game. More boss battles, more harrowing escapes. that should have been 25 episodes by itself, with plans for a second season to cover ALO, but they definitely rushed ALO,

After watching a show like that, I wouldn't hesitate to put that neurolinker on my head and gladly vegetate for a few years straight.
