The last time I came straight from onboard audio was back in like 06-07, So I dont really remember the difference between onboard and a standalone audio controller anymore. TBH the only time I ever remember using a sound card for anything was back in the days of installing duke nukem 3D LOL!
To be honest, you can hear foot steps with pretty much any audio gear that goes on your head. I always find it funny when people care about foot steps. If you let the enemy get behind you....well then you aren't playing the game right are you
razer makes crap though. That is not meant to offend you belittle you, but I want to let you know that you would be pleasantly surprised by headphones half the cost of those and a proper sound card.
For gaming though....even on board is fine. I only find sound cards useful for music. Everything else is a wash. I know a million angry noobs will flame me for saying that and talk about all the pretty birds they heard when they put in a new sound card, but I mostly agree with you, it is sort of a lower return for the value.
You should go back an forth between your receiver and on board though. On board might be better with those megladons due to that dinky little sound card. I am not 100% sure about that, but it would be a neat experiment.
