ssd failure?

Hello,
My ssd is being a piece of garbage, I load up my windows and get a black screen even in safe mode. Idodon't know if the installation is screwed or if the drive is actually dying. Luckily if I can't recover any files from it, it won't be a huge deal because only my windows 7 installation is on there. I just wanna know if its a dying drive or if the installation is bad.

Thanks

just try re-installing it and then if it still gives you a black screen i think we know the answer.

Ditto...

Do you have a spare drive? Install Windows on the spare drive boot up and do a full write read on the drive (write it till its full then copy everything you wrote to it back to the other drive). I doubt it is causing your issue. What error code are you getting. If you don't know google how to look it up. Sounds more like a NVIDIA video card with bad ram than a bad SSD but it would be pretty rare for that to be the case either.

If you do install windows on another drive take the time to install the latest firmware on your SSD since you usually can not install the firmware if you are running windows from the SSD itself.

To fill your drive just start throwing copies of junk on it in a folder that will be easy to delete later. Once you have filled up the entire drive go a head and copy that folder back to the drive that has windows on it.

Essentially this is filling your drive to the brim and then testing to see if it can read everything back. You will want to try and copy all the system files over so you are checking that part of the drive as well but sometimes that can be a PITA.

This test is more important for traditional hard drives but I think it is somewhere you can start. Someone will probably pop on hear and say oh don't do that because you only have a limited amount of writes to an SSD but seriously this wouldn't be 1/10,000th of your drives life. People get there panties in a knot over SSDs.

If you have no problems doing this then I would back up whatever you can from the drive and re-install windows.

Not sure if you already know this but to make re-installs on an SSD easier you can change all your libraries to a separate drive including the desktop. That way anything that was on the desktop, download folder, music, pictures, my documents, etc are all on a standard drive and when you re-install windows and then change the location of the libraries again everything will come back.

Don't know... plug the SSD into a port it wasn't plugged into before and plug use a different cable than the one that you originally had on it. If this solves the problem it could be the cable or the port on the motherboard.

Sounds like you solved your problem though.

Congrats.

I don't have anymore good sata cables, I might buy some, but for some reason only my ssd didnt work with the one cable. Anyways my main installation on my ssd is stuck In a continuous windows repair loop is there a way to stop it or something? Or do I have to do a fresh install of windows? And I'm using an oldish crucial m4, running latest firmware I believe.

Yeh windows repair is still running, I assume I just have to wait a few hour or so for it to fix. Rep up
