Battlefront has always been about huge armies and lots of action and death. Contrast that to Mass Effect's combat where not dying is more important than killing. That's completely neglecting how Bioware has yet to do vehicles well, but it's a major component of Battlefront. It's like saying dessert pizzas used to be good, but Lemon Meringue is awesome, so they should make a lemon meringue pizza. You'd have to violate core components of each to have something that is both, or you'd just end up with one of the two named as if it were both.

A battlefront game that isn't arcady and fast-paced is a battlefront game in name alone. Lost Planet-like gameplay would serve Battlefront far better than Mass Effect would.
Sigh. Its not like in the current state of things that Disney would let any company make a star wars game. Bioware has a resume and a good one at that.

You say SWTOR space combat is terrible, which I agree. I also find it ironic that the general thought on BF2 space combat is it was mediocre and to many people just flew around killing stuff over the objective which was blowing up the main control ship. If you wanted a ship to fly, you had to wait for them to spawn which took forever. Me and my friend could end a turtle match in about 5 minutes if we both got ships. It was bad, and most people stuck to the capture point game type.

The direction that BF2 was, and the general design of it would not be successful in a modern market. People would buy it and not play it because it would be an extremely mediocre "MMO" TPS (yes, it would be considered a MMOTPS by modern standards). The standards for those types of games are extremely high now days. Thats most likely why Lucasarts never dug into a sequel. Too much work.

And a good resume for an astrophysicist is actually a rather poor resume for a Wal Mart manager position. Developing good RPGs is not similar to developing good action games. As for letting other companies make a star wars game, that's exactly what this entire thing is about. They're no longer making their own games, just licensing. They also didn't cancel all star wars games that are in development, I know of one that is already in development but remains unannounced wink.gif

A genuine sequel to BF2 would look far more similar to Planetside 2 than anything Bioware has even touched. However, a third major faction isn't viable in Star Wars, so the PS2 style would require a forced population balancing mechanic. Battlefront 2 was released in 2005, to say it wouldn't succeed today is self-explanatory. Even Call of Duty has changed since 2005. However, should you get to the point where in order to make it fit into the new market you have to violate core principles of the game, you no longer call it part of the series (See: Battlefield: Bad Company or SWTOR). If you're making Battlefront 3, you keep the core philosophies of Battlefront 2. If they don't work, you don't make Battlefront 3, you make a different game.

Mass Effect is a good action game and RPG. The first one aged poorly but 2 and 3 are still very solid gameplay wise. Its not like you have to choose one or the other in a game.

And its not even that I think that Mass Effect is revolutionary as far as TPS go. I feel its pretty much standard. Mass Effect actually stole a lot from gears of war if I remember right. My point is that if battlefront 3 didn't meet that standard, it would be awful in comparison to these TPS.

I'm not sure if going with the planetside 2 model is wise at all considering I think its an awful game. I'd be really disappointed if battlefront 3 came out with some dumb leveling system like modern shooter games seem to adore to keep people playing in order to become more OP. A leveling system should show skill, not define skill. But thats a whole different topic.

I used to be one of the people that was super pumped up for some hint of battlefront 3. After seeing where modern shooters are going and after playing battlefront 2 again recently, I have lost my desire completely. Thats why I threw bioware out there because I'm quite enjoying ME3 multiplayer and it doesn't feel like it follows the stereotypical modern shooter design of "hurr play a bunch and get super OP with very little skill cap"

One thing I think you're missing in my argument is that I don't disagree that a Gears of War/Mass Effect style game could do well with Star Wars. I'm just saying calling such a game Battlefront 3 wouldn't be right because Battlefront evolving into a cover-based, low-death style isn't a natural evolution of the franchise.

As for the concept of levelling becoming OP..... ME3 actually has you gain power while leveling, while in games like BF3 and COD:MW76 the starting weapons are all on relatively equal footing... The whole PvE vs PvP aspect.

When I first read the title I thought it was a late April Fools joke, but it appears to be true as couple of sources are stating that Disney have shut down LucasArts, which is a shame because I liked some of the Star Wars games. Looks like Disney is going to ruin the Star Wars franchise after all, and its a shame that people have lost their jobs because of this.
