For some reason I think they will win the format war... whether we like it or not.

Why is this a news article now? Haven't some of us been saying the exact same thing on these boards for a year now?!? They stole our content!!!

Sure, there wasn't really a battle between two formats....but you know what? They helped pwn the VHS market by putting more DVD players out there....
Every time I hear this argument, I can't help but think it's a load of hooey. Yes, the PS2 was a cheap DVD player. And yes, it is documented that many Japanese bought the PS2 solely for the DVD drive, because it was the cheapest DVD player available in Japan. But in the long run, I don't think the PS2 really had squat to do with DVD taking off. DVD took off when:

1. DVD pr0n took off
2. DVDs became rentable
3. DVD players dropped below $200

With no scientific data to back me up, I really think that $200 is the magic price point for the Average Joe Wal-Mart Shopper to buy a luxury electronic component. It is no accident that the X360's HD-DVD drive is $199, IMHO.

People are getting BluRay for CHEAP. So they should **** and stop complaining lol.
It may be cheap, but people have a right to complain if they are forced to buy something they don't want in order to get something they DO want. In many cases this type of bundling is illegal. Bundling was the heart of the Microsoft antitrust case, and it is the reason we always hear about the FCC looking to force the cable companies to offer a la carte channel offerings instead of channel bundles.

Good point.

If Sony gets in trouble for throwing in this Blu-Ray drive, then I will lose all faith in law. I mean seriously, Microsoft has such a large hold on the market, that their bundling could cause a serious problem, but Sony is completely optional. Before this recent year, you practically could not find a computer for sale (retail) without Windows pre-installed on it. It's not like you have to live with PS3, as there are two other consoles out there.

Then again, you don't have to live with Windows, but that's a much harder feat than not living with the PS3 with its Blu-Ray drive.

Just to be clear, I wasn't implying that Sony should get into legal trouble because of their bundling decision. I was just using the legal problems that previous bundlers (Microsoft) have been in, and the investigations and debates about current bundling practices that we all live with every day (cable companies), to illustrate that bundling is often regarded as anti-competitive and/or anti-consumer in the long run. Sony clearly broke no law with their Blu-Ray bundling.

They still suck though.
