Random Freezes

I think there may be a problem with with my video driver or maybe even my cards. My computer will randomly freeze. Sometimes it will freeze 5mins after starting windows, after surfing the web for a few hours, or even after a day or two of heavy use (never in a game or on prime95... coincidence?). Here is some background information (sorry if this is a lot to read. I just do not want to leave anything out that may be important):

7 Days ago: Increased my OC CPU from 4.2 to 4.5GHz (was stable for 2 years at 4.2)

6 Days ago: Ran perfectly all day.

5 Days ago: FInally installed SP1 along with 40+ updates. Ran perfectly after.

4 Days ago: Heavy use of computer, including gaming, no problems

3 Days ago: Decided to OC my GPU, worked for a few hours then got a directx error then a black screen. Computer was still on and working just no video. I reduced the OC and continued to play. After another hour or so the same thing happened again (directx error and black screen). I reduced the OC again and used the computer the remainder of the day with no problems.

2 Days ago: Used and played on my computer more with no problems for about 6 hours. I then Took a break for a while, I then came back and was surfing the internet when my computer froze. I proceeded to restart my computer, didnt pay much attention to the freeze, and about 10 mins after rebooting it froze again. I then rebooted again and used it about 2 hours before it froze again. I noticed in the bios my cpu temp was 51c (32c according to real temp) so I resinked my heatsink (needed to be done anyways) and reduced my GPU OC yet again. The rest of the night was perfect.

1 Day ago: Turned my computer on and left it running for about 4 hours while I went out. When I came back the computer was running, but I had no video (monitor just cycled through the different inputs). I restarted the computer and opened prime95, real temp, CPUz, and a web page at the same time. My computer froze and I got my first BSOD. After rebooting, I lowered my GPU OC yet again (only have been doing 5mhz at a time) and used the computer the rest of the night. Before going to bed I ran Prime95 overnight. Luckily in the morning it was still running.

Today: After stopping prime95 from the previous night, I shut down my computer for a few hours. I then turned it back on and left it alone for a few hours and when I returned it was frozen. At this point my GPU is still overclocked, but less than it was during the 2 years of stable use.

When I say frozen I mean I cannot move the mouse, there is no sound, and never goes to a BSOD or anything. I am going to try a clean ati driver install when I get home (I have always just installed over old) from work in a few hours, but aside from that I have no idea what could be causing this. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I just want to have a stable computer. Oh and my RAM is not OCed.

Do a clean reinstall of drivers. Return both cards to stock and see what happens. If still having issues then disable crossfire and try each card independently.

Did a clean reinstall of drivers and returned both cards to stock. I also downclocked my cpu to 4.4GHz. I am running Prime95 now and everything actually feels much smoother. Ill update if I get another freeze or am stable for the next few days (hoping this). Thank you.

Everything was running perfectly, so I decided to up my OC to 4.5Ghz again. After two about 5 mins of being in windows my computer froze again. I think it has to be that extra 100mhz. I am going to stick with 4.4ghz since it seems to be stable. As far as the clean video driver reinstall, I would highly recommend do this if you have not. My computer, in games and even in simple day to day use, is much smoother. I actually got better FPS at 4.4ghz and stock 6870s (900/1050) than 4.5Ghz and 970/1085.
