Opinions needed [New Gaming Build]

Thread Starter
I'm helping my little brother get his gaming build together.
Below is what we have so far but I know you guys usually have better ideas of what I can switch out.
What we have so far is a mixture of some of my suggestions to him and what he originally had planned on getting.
He is looking to be able to run today's games like Battlefield 3 and future games like Battlefield 4 (Your best guess on what it will require) which are the most heavy on graphic requirements on Ultra settings. No overclocking, or intercooling. Let me know what you guys think. I need your help on this one so I can save him some money. I'm still on the learning stage.

I do not wish to come across as being rude, but if you do not plan to overclock then you might consider dropping the K model processor for a few bucks(although I highly suggest you reconsider as overclocking an I-5 is really very easy and pretty safe too)! Also, if you do plan to overlclock afterall, you can get a really nice heatsink such as a Coolermaster Hyper212 EVO for only $30.

Another suggestion might be to consider looking at the ATI 7950, I am an Nvidia fan, but in fairness they seem to get better reviews and benchmarks for the money for the time being. I think you can get one of the lower models with a couple of decent games from newegg now for the same price as the 660ti you mentioned.

The monitor is really a matter of preference, but if you are able to spring a little more then you could get into an IPS panel which would have greatly superior color and image quality. I'm thinking along the line of something like a DELL U2313H, but you might want to look around a bit if you plan on keeping it for a while.

Lastly, I'm not familiar with the exact model of PS unit that you are looking at, but you should never go cheap on a PS. The wattage should be fine for your build, just make sure to check for reviews as the quality.

We're trying to cut down on the cost by as much as possible without it impacting performance too much. Somewhere less than $1000 all together. The more economical the better.

I also want to make sure that everything will work together before I place the order.

Why would you come off as rude? I need people's opinions. That's the only way to learn. As of now, I am not planning on Overclocking. That just stacks up your costs even more since you have to upgrade your motherboard, CPU, add intercooling/fans. I'll get there, but just not right now. I'll go upgrading as I go. Which I5 would you suggest? I was doing some research and a lot of gamers recommend the AMD FX-8150 over the I5 and others say that you can't even compare the two because Intel blows AMD out of the water. Is this just a biased opinion? I want to know the truth since its a huge difference in price.

Regarding the graphics card, I rather stick to the Nvidia being that its more trust worthy and less expensive than the ATI 7950.

First off, the power supply selection is just fine. Rosewill's Capstone line is a rather high-quality unit.

Since the i5-3570K is only slightly ($20-$30) more expensive than the price/performance "king" of non-OC i5 chips (the i5-3470), you might as well get the 3570K and run it at stock speeds initially. You said you will eventually overclock, thus it's worth the slightly higher initial price to avoid having to go to the trouble of switching out CPUs in the future. It beats the AMD FX-8xxx chips by a fair margin when both are at stock clocks anyhow.

As for the video card, I'm almost tempted to advise to drop down to the 660 non-Ti. The reason I say this is because the 660 Ti is 50% more expensive but only delivers ~15% more performance. The 192-bit bus starts to be a bottleneck to the card once you get to the 660 Ti's level. I've always been of the opinion that the next logical step up from the 660 is the 670 with its 256-bit bus. Anyhow, here's a chart of the relative performance of the 660, 660 Ti, and 670 and the reference specs for all three.

Code:
NAME CUDA TMU ROP SMX BASE BOOST MEMCL BUS MEMSZ TDP MSRP
660 960 80 24 5 980 1032 6008 192 2048 140 $199
660 Ti 1344 112 24 7 915 980 6008 192 2048 150 $299
670 1344 112 32 7 915 980 6008 256 2048 170 $399

For the amount of $ your wanting to put into it, i think you have picked out the best build for your situation. I don't see any hardware changing that are worth wild... I don't know how you feel about Acer for a monitor but this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009421 will bring your overall price down... Up to you of course. Best of luck smile.gif
