Building a new Pc - Page 2

With that budget, definitely get Intel C2D, the performance gain is insane. No matter how loyal you are to AMD the 5200 isn't really going to be that much of an improvement over your 4600, maybe a few hundred mhz. I personally think that just a better graphics card will help, I use 3D Studio Max all the time, and it is very graphics card intensive on my machine. So I think somethin better than a 1600 woudl do you well, something in the 1900 range.

But if you must spend the money then go C2D

Even if not... for a new rig, C2D does not cost much more than AMD

Intel are a lot better than AMD at this moment in time.

My take:

Subtotal: $3,840.84
<getting links>

Some nice items in this rig that probably are more show than go, like the Blu-Ray DVD and the dual Raptor 150GB... dropping these items might make a QX6700 (Quad Core) affordable.

Just post a thread in the watercooling section of the forum for advice on that

PS: do account for like $300 in shipping, since you're in Alaska.

If AMD is a must (I'd not recommend it), then I'd go with this:

CPU: AMD Opteron 1216 Santa Ana 2.4GHz Socket AM2 Dual Core $338
MoBo: DFI LANPARTY UT NF590 SLI-M2R/G Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI $189.99

A bit more expensive and worse performance.... no reason to. And I am not an Intel 'fanboy'; I had several AMD rigs in the past (my previous rig was Opteron 170)

No need for Raptors, might as well go with Seagates with Perpendicular Recording technology. Much more storage, and they're fast! A couple of those in RAID0 and not only would you have about 4x the storage of a single Raptor, but probably be faster as well.

Adam: check my build again... I went for both 2x 150GB raptors for system/programs, and 2x 320GB Perps for storage... if that's not enough, then I don't know what it

If he wants to save, just drop the Raptors (and maybe even add a perp)

Yeah... the Blu Ray is just for the fun of it.... let me just post the 'stripped down' rig. (without the Blu Ray and the raptors)
Total: $2,790.87

This rig will do anything you want without a hitch.

Possible updates to make it look more yummy:
