Recommendation for DDR-3 $70.00 AMD Motherboard

Thread Starter
Trust me, my friends, I do try to live up to my nick of "incurablegeek". Over the years I have chased the dragon always trying to build the biggest, baddest computers possible (Now two Win 7 and one Linux). The result is I have lots and lots of brand-new stuff lying around ....

So I thought I would just build a couple of computers to sell on Craigslist or Ebay. Well, I messed up and bought a UD3 and UD5 Gigabyte boards. For what it's worth I never used them - back and forth on RMA with GB. Those of you who are familiar with the game Three Card Monte will be intrigued to learn that Gigabyte actually invented this game. At least that's what I feel having played their RMA game. rolleyes.gif

The long and the short of it is I cannot (ethically) use either of those boards in a computer to sell with all new components. If I advertise this computer as "new", I want everything in it to actually be new - and unlike the trash GB puts out, actually working and working well.

So ... I need a DDR3 AMD motherboard for a brand-new, never used AMD Quad Core, etc. I don't expect to make any money selling this rig but I do want to be able to say that I would use it myself and that it is in fact a new computer.

Any suggestions for a reliable AMD DDR3 Motherboard circa $70.00?

++++++
Oops, forgot to specify that I need 4 RAM slots.

We will need a model number, as some quad cores requires a beefy VRM setup and others don't.

Know about the VRM problem but because I have always purchased premium, and not "budget", boards, it never was a factor to consider.

AMD Phenom II X4 965 AM3 3.4Ghz 512KB 45NM 125W 4000MHZ http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002SRQ214/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ (990X chipset), 4+1 VRM $74.99 + free shipping @newgg looks like a real good choice.

Any thoughts on MSI 970A-G43 AM3+ AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130679 One comment on NewEgg about this board did scare me though

Without sounding snarky or ungrateful, I must say that I wouldn't ever buy another Gigabyte motherboard. Too long a story required to explain why. Completely dishonest company.

after seeing how much fun you had with Gigabyte I would
avoid MSI for AMD motherboards. MSI makes some great
video card and intel motherboards but they suck for AMD now.
They used to make great socket A boards. Lots of VRM design,
cooling and cheap parts for AM3 boards from MSI.

ASRock 970 EXTREME3 has a solid VRM design. Plus they put
the 990X chipset in it instead of the 970. Lot of bang for the buck

Looks to be a good board, but does not come with the 990X. That appears to be a misprint on OCN. Pls see http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=13-157-280&SortField=0&SummaryType=0&Pagesize=10&PurchaseMark=&SelectedRating=-1&VideoOnlyMark=False&VendorMark=&IsFeedbackTab=true&Page=3#scrollFullInfo

Just curious. The ASRock 970DE3/U3S3 AMD 770 that I mentioned before. Is it a dog or OK for a budget build? http://www.amazon.com/ASRock-970DE3-U3S3-AMD-DDR3/dp/B007NOWDEM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

AMD 990X/970 AM3+ motherboard buyers' guide & help thread
http://www.overclock.net/t/1144067/amd-990x-970-am3-motherboard-buyers-guide-help-thread

ASRock 970DE3/U3S3 AMD 770 is not build like the Extreme series. No cooling on the VRM. different VRM design.
very thin PCB. feels like it will snap if you apply to much pressure. it does support 140W TDP (tested it with an unlock B50).
does come with plenty of SATA connectors. USB 3.0 works well. not a bad board but it is build to be cheap.

Only the ASRock 970 Extreme4 has the 990X chipset. it was on sale with a 8GB stick of ram on newegg. copy and pasted my AMD motherboard list.
sorry for the mistake. good catch. I think the 970 Extreme 3 for $75 is a good deal.

- 3 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots (PCIE2/PCIE4: single at x16 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4), or dual at x8 (PCIE2) / x8 (PCIE4) ; PCIE5: x4 mode) Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

@Heuchler, you really provided some sound information - with no hype. I surely do appreciate your time and your honesty.

Please feel free to tell me I'm a big dummy if that's what you think but I went with the ASRock 970DE3/U3S3 AMD 770. It looked to be good enough for this computer I am building for a kid. I went through the pdf manual and liked what I saw - especially for the price.

http://www.amazon.com/ASRock-970DE3-U3S3-AMD-DDR3/dp/B007NOWDEM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Oh btw, even though I am not a huge believer in merit badges, gold stars and the like, I did feel a need to Rep+ you, reason being I wanted people to be able to trust your advice. thumb.gif
