Why have games hit a brick wall as far as graphics? - Page 4

crysis 3 is a different beast. Can't believe how bad Crysis 1 looks when you play crysis 3 for like a month and go back. Crysis 1 is still good looking, but nothing compared to the 3rd one, c3 pushes graphically

Well, yes. If the lowest denominator is raised, so will the overall result. The point of diminishing returns are also a part that's holding games back graphically. I would also believe that the lack of a unified programming language (HSA, anyone?) is hampering the progress; optimization is also a part of games hitting the wall: you can only optimize an API to a certain point.
I don't believe in the resolution "holding us back" just yet - I'd say the lack of high textures in many games are holding us back - Again because of the current consoles. When we start seeing high textures in games, then the monitor resolution could start to hold graphics back from furthering the development.
Just my 50 cents.

EDIT: high textures = high res. textures. Im getting tired now tongue.gif

I think it's all about the business model instead of all this talk about consoles and graphic represenation (eg minecraft). It's just simple, companies either make the cheapest looking graphics that sells to make money, or are just limited in resources to make great graphics. When they do, it's at the cost of length and quality of the campaign, bugs and other mechanical issues.

Not exactly.

Nehalem chips from 5 years ago (i7-920) are still perfectly capable of pushing games just fine.

Every time Intel does a die shrink or improves their architecture, they've been holding the line constant or having a 5-15% increases every generation in raw x86 performance. Quite honestly, 95% of people are fine using a Conroe for day to day tasks. Intel has instead been dumping all the transistors they've been able to add into graphics while ruthlessly ratcheting down the power consumption.

So, really, Intel sees no need for more powerful CPUs per se. TBH neither do I. They just don't really care about x86 performance right now as long as they give it a token bump of a few percent per generation and plow all savings into power draw and graphics.

Isn't that what i said?wink.gif There are no CPUs that can handle more CPU intensive games so less companies make them. And games like planetside 2 suffer because they rely too much on the CPU (or whatever bottleneck that causes the game to run so bad on so many machines)

Honestly, one thing that will immerse me even more is lighting. Make ever light produce dynamic shadows and let me see my own feet and guaranteed I will lose myself in a game. Textures can be modded in and character models and polygons can only go so high up before it starts becoming unnecessarily tasking on hardware. But the shadows and light that we cast will definitely fool me into thinking I've jumped into another world.

imho I think the two biggest issues are shadows and colors......games can never get colors right.....they're always too rich and bright......also you don't need super powerful video cards for that.....and if you listen to ^^^^that^^^^^ video, you feel like he is implying that you're wasting money upgrading your hardware.....the whole point of spending $3000 on graphics alone(Titans in surround for example), is to have the best possible visual setting with the most immersion.......now what he is saying is that it is impossible to achieve super visuals with today's technology....ok, so why are games becoming more demanding then?,,,,,are developers deliberately coding games poorly so you feel like you need to upgrade, that way the hardware industry keeps going, even though visuals are slowing down ?.....I mean what is the point then?........my main rig for example......3 GTX480s, 3 1080p monitors with a total of 6040x1080, and my biggest bottleneck is vram.....but if I stay on a single screen, then I can keep going....I mean Crysis 3, everything as high as it will go, 1920x1080, vsync on, 60FPS locked and no problems......and this is on hardware that came out in 2010......3 years

Ah, well where we disagree is that you believe that faster CPU's would result in better games whereas I believe that faster CPU's would result in hardware simply not being pushed. I don't think that, given additional computing power, developers would make better games.

Consoles are a big part of the problem with graphics stalling, true, but I stand by my monitor pixel density hypothesis.

A better question is: Why have games hit a brick wall as far as AI? The last time I recall anyone trying to actually take a step forward regarding AI was GSC with S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl. In general there haven't been any innovative games for several years, so they seem to have hit a brick wall as far as innovation goes. These are much more important than graphics. rolleyes.gif
