Should I upgrade my ram?

Thread Starter
I currently have 4x 2GB DDR3 1333Mhz (Kingston HyperX if makes any difference..) and I do pretty much of "lazy multitasking" aka. leave stuff in the background, including games, "heavy" apps like photoshop etc and also occasionally run some virtual machines on this computer, and sometimes it just feels 8GB is not enought. However, I have all 4 slots in use, so that would mean getting rid of old memory and getting all new. I was thinking of possibly getting 2x8GB so that i would have room for more upgrading later on. my mobo supports up to 32GB so upgrade after that would still be possible. My mobo is Asus P8Z68-V.

Should I upgrade now or later? (why?)
Should I get 2x8GB or some other configuration? (why?)
What maker and frequency do you recommend? (why?)

I am a student, which means I'm not very rich, so no need to recommend some 500 euro memorysets. rolleyes.gif

I really can't comment of if you should get more RAM, but if you do I'd recommend getting a 2x8GB DDR3-1600 CL9 kit from Corsair, Crucial, G.Skill, Kingston, or Patriot.

Photoshop wink.gif Enough said!

You would definitely see improvement gains if upgrading RAM, especially since you like to multi-task.

Now the real question is whether you want to do 16gb or 32gb.

Since you're a student with not a lot of money, (me too thumb.gif)

I would suggest buying the "popular" configuration, or most common one on the market, which is 1600mhz.

But remember since you are currently running 1333, everything will run at 1333, so you'd have to sell your current ram to make it worth getting anything higher mhz.

If you don't want to sell your sticks, then stick with 1333, you wont see massive gains between 1333 ->1600

G.Skill ARES 1600 (For good cooler compability, modern RAM sticks do not need overoverkill heatspreaders like the ones in a dominator) or Kingston HyperX Genesis if you're brand loyal wink.gif

For Photoshop you will really see an improvememnt with more faster RAM, so i'd say update biggrin.gif

While 1600 MHz CAS 9 RAM is almost the basic speeds an enthusiast computer should have, if you have the money try and make the jump to 1866 MHz RAM. Avoid the "high end" sets, mostly recognizable by big, bulky heatspreadrrs though (like the Dominators or TridentX), those sets will yield you little gain for a lot more money, not really worth it.

Anything made by G-Skill, Corsair, Samsung or Kingston should be rock solid, those brands are the ones that always get my money, RAM-wise.

Difference is if you get a Corsair RAM you won't be able to OC to 1866. With Hyperx Genesis, Samsung "Magic", G.Skill they do 1866 easily hyperx can do 2133 if you're lucky and with Samsung 2133 CL8-9-9 is possible at 1.4v i think

For samsung it depends on the sticks, I did try 2133 c8 on the samsung green (12/21), 1.4V not even close, I'd have to find the screen but pretty sure it was closer to 1.7V for any kind of stability.
New mid range corsair kits tend to suck for overclocking, they bin pretty tight. Samsung is still good for the price, g skill is nice, crucial is another that hasn't been mentioned, they do have some impressive overclocking kits.

No way, unless you have a golden kit. I couldn't even get 2133 9-9-9-24 @ 1.5v, but i was able to get 2133 9-10-9-25 @ 1.53v. 2133 CAS 8 would take 1.6v+ i'd reckon.

I forgot about Crucial, my backup kit is an awesome OCer. I own 2 sticks of this RAM, and they played well together with my Sammy's between 1.45-1.55v. The base speeds aren't bad at all, 1600 8-8-8-22 @ 1.5v. I even got them stable 1866 MHz 9-9-9-24 @ 1.48v on my SB rig, and they were stable 1600 MHz 9-9-9-24 @ 1.43v.

To be fair all new corsair kits can't OC at all, there was a review of the Dominator Platinum sticks and all he got out of the RAM was extra 50MHz ... that's terrible

For great corsair you have to go to the top end, which isn't worthwhile for most, pretty much for benchers. Most people want affordable corsair kits & the low end & mid range aren't great overclockers.
The top end corsair kits overclock very well, but they don't come cheap.
