I just ordered one of these Tuesday. 55$ Canadian, but maybe I can get them to cover some of the difference (it hasn't even arrived yet!)

Anything's possible but if we base this on historical pricing that most likely won't be for at least a few months: http://camelcamelcamel.com/Metro-Vacuum-ED500-500-Watt-Electric/product/B001J4ZOAW

I wrote a review on this item. Still one of my best purchases to date.

Yeah, you gotta be careful about this as the spinning fans will also generate electricity, potentially damaging your motherboard fan headers. And the datavac will spin them at serious speed if you let it.

This is just made to blow things around. A compressor can do that and is much more versatile. Painting, inflating tires, etc. You can get a 150psi compressor for $50 or less.

The data vac is cool, but gimmicky and overpriced is all I'm saying.

Not really. Its small form factor and portability is what makes it attractive. Much more cost effective compared to canned air. Not everyone has a compressor or room to put one either. They are loud as all hell too.

Sure, I gotcha, but a compressor still just "blows stuff around." All the tasks you're describing are little more than pushing compressed air out of a tank into a special tool. The advantage of this rather than a general-purpose compressor is that it doesn't take up nearly as much space and comes with most of the attachments you need to blowing dust out. I think a compressor can do a similar job, but then you need various nozzles and hoses since it's not nearly as portable.
