CPU Requirement for Dual 7970 in Crossfire OCed

Thread Starter
Hi Folks,

I have that old spare motherboard MB PCI-E: 1x16 1x8, Dual @8 Asus Maximum IV GZ S1155, which I'm planning to include in a small 3D benchmarking project and I was wondering what CPU can I put on it?

Planned Hardware:
Mobo: PCI-E: 1x16 1x8, Dual @8 Asus Maximum IV GZ S1155
GPU: 2 x 7970 Vapor-x GHz Edition running in Crossfire @1200Mhz OCed
CPU: ??? i3-2*** series, i3-3*** series, i5?

Should I use i5, i7 or is it i3 just going to do the job without becoming a bottleneck?
I don't need fast CPU because I'll be testing custom mod development process of OpenCL+ImageMagic and ffmpeg for high volume image and video rendering.

Thanks!

I believe ImageMagick benefits from multi (6-8) cores so....with your current motherboard I'd recommend i7 with hyperthreading.

IMO you should use an i7 3770k. The hyper threading should really help with your 3d benchmarking project and you will see little to no bottleneck when you OC it. Also, the i7 will really help in some modern games and especially games that are going to be coming out soon and in the future. More developers are going to start utilizing hyper threading.

Thanks guys, The reason I'm looking for a cheap CPU is because I don't want to spend $$$ I already have 3 production servers running 4-way Crossed and I'd like to have just small testing environment where I can do some extended testing without High-end CPU. I'm writing some custom libs which I'd like to test on mostly GPUs with minimum CPU hyperthreading, but still be able to OC the dual SLi without being dependent on the CPU limits. It's just for testing purposes in development environment.

My bad BirdmanDK one of my production servers is running with NVidias and I'm always thinking about SLi biggrin.gif

While an i3 may work, it will make a huge bottleneck. I saw a bit of issues with an i3-550 OC'd to 4.6 GHz trying to feed two GTX 470's, and considering the new i3's cannot be OC'd at all, you might see more problems.

I'd pick at the very least an OCable i5, or an i7. My own Xeon (it's basically an i7-930) @ 4 GHz happily feeds my Xfired 7950+7970 cards.
