Complete overclocking beginner looking for advice

Thread Starter
Hi all,

Like the title of the thread suggests I'm a complete and utter novice when it comes to overclocking but I think I'm going to give it a go... possibly. biggrin.gif If this is the wrong area can you close the thread and I'll repost in the right area?

I suppose my first question is about my setup.

1) I currently have an air cooled config. First off the bat, should I even be considering OC'ing an air cooled config?

Assuming the answer to the above is "possibly yes, depends on your config" then here is what I am working with from a OC'ing perspective:

*Fractal Define R3 ATX case

*(3 of)120mm Scythe Gentle Typhoon 1450 rp

*MSI P67A-GD55-B3 LGA1155 DDR3 ATX

*Be Quiet! Dark Rock Advanced CPU Cooler

*Intel Core i5-2500K 3.30GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor

*1536MB MSI GTX580 TWINFROXR2OC

Would this combination of hardware have potential to be safely overclocked?

I was thinking of using MSI afterburner to OC the GPU but as this is a pre-overclocked GPU I'm not sure that this is either even possible or a good idea....

I don't even know where to start with the CPU! smile.gif This would perhaps be done through the bios?

Sorry for being a pest, I'm already having palpitations at the thought of doing this but I need to squeeze more life out of my rig. The wife and I have an agreement that I cannot upgrade till next year (although hopefully the 7 series Nvidia cards and new Intel processors, DDR4 RAM will be available then!).

I have some images of my sensors etc if that is any use although I can't seem to upload them?

Thanks for your time

OK so anyways I decided to use the MSI overclock genie thing that came with the motherboard...

It jumped my CPU core speed to 4190.71 MHz... The idle temps for my cores are:

0 - 43
1 - 48
2 - 43
3 - 44

when prior to pressing this button they were all in the very low 30's

Am I right in thinking that this is an OC from 3.3 GHz to 4.1 GHz?

Should the core speed remain @ 4.1 GHz even when idle?

No idea if this is bad or not? I'm going to go and try to find something that'll put the CPU under some stress... hope the computer doesn't melt!

Some CPU's newer ones have turbo mode. Your CPU if idle is 4.1 you have an older model CPU or you have the Turbo Technolgy off in BIOS. The Temps look fine

Also torture test are not recommended. Try something like BOINC programs so you can see if the CPU can Compute without any errors first. Check the Temps after about an hour or so then check your results and the work threads they provide for you. If your getting errors then start down clocking. No errors then leave overnight with 4 threads running. Still no erros then you can go a little higher but check temps under constant load. Give me a hollar if you need me to clarify this abit more.

Hey, thanks for the fast response! Much appreciated smile.gif

I decided to run Far Cry 3 on my usual settings (although I've never monitored the CPU temp while doing so before) and the CPU temp on 2 cores jumped to 80 degrees when using the fast travel option. This got me a little concerned as the "Tj. Max" is @ 98 degrees (auto shutdown?).

I suspect that I'm going to have to muck about with the voltage(confusedsmiley.png) in order to get something more stable? CPUZ was flashing warnings at me frown.gif

I shall take you up on your advice though and go and google the BOINC programme and report back. In the interim i'm also going to find some kind of guide to mess around with the voltage (assuming that is a good idea). I guess that more voltage = more heat?

Considering that I built this PC myself (with the help of this forum some time ago I might add) I've got nightmares about a lack of thermal paste smile.gif

Ha ha! I took out the CPU, and... well.. there was little to no thermal paste... can that stuff evaporate? wink.gif

I must've been really paranoid when installing it in the first instance taking the "should be transparent" advice a little too... literally...

I've since applied a new coat of thermal paste, remounted the heat sink (avoiding those corsair heat spreaders by shifting them over into slots 2 + 4) OC'd to 4.0 GHz using rh MSI control centre and I'm idle @ 22 - 26 degrees... This is a 20 degree difference from previous!

Loaded up Far Cry 3, ramped up the graphics by quite a margin and the max temp I got is 40 degrees. This is somewhat of an improvement smile.gif

Now for the GPU.... Should be able to do something as I've pointed the CPU's fan down towards it smile.gif

Wish me luck!

The only ones that do that are silicone based and are conductive. STay away from those. Good luck

Well it looks like the OC is stable @ 4.2GHz with a VID maxing around 1.3511 v. I think I'm quite happy with this.

Performance, for my requirements, has improved. Wasn't as hard as I thought! Happy days.

Thanks for the advice/ help Carbonite77.
