I've been playing Sim City on a friend's origin account and I can say that the bonus given by using this DLC is retarded. It boosted my entire's city happiness with one depot. I will never use it as it is an obvious ploy for advertisement.

It's an inevitable progression. I realize that I'm older than most of you - but I still remember when there were no advertisements on cable TV. It made sense - that was why you had to pay for it. Then some of the networks started advertising - now they have every bit as much advertising content as the 'free' OTA networks... but you actually have to pay more per month for the "privilege". rolleyes.gif

On the other hand, advertising revenues as well as in-show product placement have allowed many cable networks to release serial shows with budgets and effects (and in many cases the same actors) that were previously only available in blockbuster movies. So it's not all bad. Imagine if The Walking Dead had to be made with a 1980's TV studio budget. sicksmiley.png

The problem will really come from how far the consumer is willing to accept advertising without benefit. If it makes your Sims happier... that's not a good enough compensation (IMO at least), but on the other hand if the additional sponsorship allows for better writing, better voice-acting talent, higher-quality artwork, and/or the same or lower price-per-title... then I'm all for it.

Of course, I still buy only the products I want - from the companies I want to support - regardless of whatever the latest advertisements are attempting to woo me with. biggrin.gif

As long as you don't have to pay for the advertisements(like with magazines or cable TV), I don't see a big deal here. There should be real businesses in the game all over the place. What is the difference if you see a sign that says "Joe's Electric Car Charging Station" or a sign for a "Nissan Leaf Charging Station"? Both tell you the same thing except one you can relate to in real life. Plus I am sure Nissan is paying for it. The more money they can generate off the game the longer the servers for it will be running.

You see...that wouldn't effect my game play at all. Now if the map was a place out in the middle of nowhere...yeah...it wouldn't work, but if the map was a major city it would harm the game play immersion NOT to have them.

I wouldn't even give the benefit of doubt in that scenario. At least in Florida, you see the most random advertisements way out into a 100 mile highway with nothing but fields on either side.

It shouldn't have more than a minor effect on happiness. It's not realistic at all, it's been made really unbalanced to boost adoption and promote advertising. Not to mention how a lot of people feel about being forced to play Sim City on their servers when it can be done offline...

Except it's not a competitive game, so not using it doesn't hurt you in any way.

You're right, it's not. However, as I've said numerous times before, development budgets are not rising proportional with sales, they're rising much faster, especially if you consider inflation favoring the consumer in this industry (2005's cementing of the $60 game is equivalent to $~69 today). The "gaming" market is not a single market. Each individual genre has its own market and games that attempt to pull from outside that market usually alienate many of the people already in that market (See: SWTOR). But the people in that market still demand better, bigger games while many would refuse a game being a base $70 and complain when the "bigger" part comes as DLC that costs extra. Giving more for the same price isn't a good business strategy when you're not rewarded with proportionately increased sales. In-game advertising pays for that bigger, better route without costing the consumer and also making the publisher happier. I've seen people complain that less than 10% of EA's gross revenue is profit, but I can't figure out why anyone not invested in EA would find that a bad thing.

In game advertising isn't an alternative to full-priced games, we're past that point. It's an alternative to games costing more than they currently do.
