Human beings have been scapegoating everything other than our selfish, evil natures since at least the beginning of written history... and probably before that.

It's interesting that music came up... I can guarantee that most of the "Rock N Roll causes all immorality and will signal the end of society" parents are dead or close to it by now... yet Tipper and the PMRC started that back up in the 90s, then it appeared again around Columbine, and will undoubtedly rear it's head 20 years in the future when someone is looking for "why some kid went crazy and killed themselves, or other people's kids, or whatever". There is no grand utopia that is waiting us when the "next generation" takes power - any more than we are currently living in the utopia that many hippies in the 60s envisioned when they were in college. rolleyes.gif
There's something the generations that grew up post 9/11 are abandoning that has been entrenched for most of human civilization, that should have an effect. Sadly, discussion of it is one of the 3 forbidden on OCN. biggrin.gif

On the other hand, I do agree that there is a significant fundamental difference between these socio-political trends/issues and the prevalence of advertising in our society. The main difference is that no matter how much people would like it to be otherwise, governments and corporations are not 'moral' or 'ethical' constructs... and to a large extent are actually antithetical to such concepts. If a person steals all of the resources in their environment to the detriment of all other people sharing the same environment - that person is considered sociopathic, greedy and evil. If a company does exactly the same thing... it is successful and (despite what some people may say under their breath) celebrated in the form of investment dollars.

My argument is not that EA is now or has ever done anything unethical, inconsiderate, or for that matter even unexpected. However, since I think they suck as much as Activision as far as the products they publish and the manner in which they deal with both the game developers and their customers in general - I don't support them. As far as corporate branding and advertising being present in SimCity... I think there should be crap loads of it... after all - I don't watch or even enjoy sporting events... but I've never seen a stadium of any kind that didn't have somewhere on the magnitude of 200 separate corporate sponsors.
Well said. Advertising in games stands to benefit the industry, which in turn benefits gamers. If it becomes big enough, we might even see the return of AAA-quality niche games.

I also see Knucklehead's position however, and it brings to mind what's happened with USA network shows... first it was simply the fact that EVERYONE owned and drove either a Kia or a Hyundai... I'm fine with that. However, when the characters in a show are in the middle of a car chase, and stop to comment on how comfortable the seats in the car are or out there's an iPod dock standard... then I not only turn the channel, but stop watching the network as a whole. tongue.gif
It's not that I don't see his position. It's just that position isn't a logical one to argue from. The number of assumptions made to say "because 1 became Q, z will become Pluto" is absurd. You've at least got to explain the assumptions along the way.

Thought it was dumb at first but if there's a game to do this in, it's this game honestly.
