No trace of windows 7 after Installing Zorin OS

Thread Starter
Im sorry if this is the wrong place to post this.

I decided to try out zorin os and clicked the install alongside windows button or at least I strongly believe I did. after it installed i found it to be a bit glitchy (flashing screen, no mouse responce, etc)
so I tried to revert back to windows 7 and i couldnt find it anywhere. I checked the grub bootloader thingy (I believe) and it wasnt listed.

There was some very important info that was on my windows 7 folders that i need to recover and the thing is that i didnt remember to back up my info before i installed zorin os.

so Im wondering, how could i locate my windows 7 stuff if it still exists and if it doesnt exist is there a way to recover my info?

thanks alot for your help.

The BCD might be corrupt or missing. You could try rebuilding it to get Windows to boot.

Open GParted and check if the Windows partition(s) is still there. If so, you can either recover your files by mounting it, or you can try to get Windows to boot again.

My bet is either on .
  1. You accidentally clicked the wrong button and installed on the whole drive.
  2. You installed alongside Windows but grub didn't detect it properly.

If the partition is still listed in GParted, then open a terminal and type these 2 lines one at a time.
Code:
 sudo apt-get install os-prober

 sudo update-grub

After you type update-grub it should tell you it detected Windows and you should be able to restart and select it.

Or if you wish to just go back to Windows boot up your Windows install disc and click Repair, then the install you want to repair, then Command Prompt and type these lines
Code:
bootrec.exe /fixmbr
bootrec.exe /fixboot
bootrec.exe /rebuildbcd

And Windows should be back to normal and you can just delete the Zorin partition.

And if you did accidentally install over the whole drive, there are a few tools out there to recover your data. Most of the time most things can be recovered if you haven't done a low level wipe or zero'd the drive.
