I killed my 3770k

Thread Starter
Hello.

Yesterday i wanted to try the IHS removal guide on my cpu to get better temperatures.

I used a cuttingknife and not a razer blade because i didn't had one.

So everything went well and after a few minutes the metal shield got loose. Then i noticed the green pcb got heavily scratched frown.gif I gues i used to much force on the knife because i was ticking it with a scewdriver.

I still feel very bad about this because it was such a nice cpu and i have to save few weeks to get another one, because this chips are not cheap frown.gif

When i tried to boot my motherboard it didn't post and i saw nothng on my debug led. HDD started to spin up and then around the socket area i saw a little smoke go up in the air. I've cut the power and altough i'm pretty sure the cpu is dead i'm afraid it screwed my motherboard also up. Is this possible?

Is there anything i can do to fix this cpu, it's a real shame for the money damn. I even read about some guy doing nail polish to fix his cpu? Should this work? Or is it the same stuff like the dead hdd in deepfreeze.

I really feel like crap. 350 euro dead

The nailpolish is always worth a try, it actually works from what I have read..
Shame about the CPU though if it's fully dead and it sounds like it if it was smoking. It does also possibly mean that the motherboard is dead, are you able to test your motherboard with another CPU? Anything just to see if it will post and take any form of load.

That sucks man. Hope you get a new chip soon. Im gonna be trying the hammer and vise method tonight. Tried it last night with an old e5300 and it went smooth.

I don't understand why anyone would try this unless they had enough disposable income to buy another chip immediately.

It takes a lot of patience to do such thing. Why risk a 300$ chip when you didn't have at least the right tools for it?

Poor thing. mad.gif

It was just a little smoke that went up and i also have to say the cpu makes a very strange noise when i power up the motherboard. I never heard this sound, it's difficult to locate with the ear but i'm 99% sure it's from the cpu area. I have the feeling the Asrock z77 extreme4 motherboard still works, if i press OC RESET at the I/O i can hear and see the motherboard and hdd rebooting, but still no error led. Sadly enough i don't have any other 1155 cpu to test the board. So the only way is buying a new one in the next couple weeks and pray if everything works normal.

Gonna test the nail polish thing but the problem is i live here with my dad. So no female stuff ... Any alternatives?

You should have used the Vice + Hammer Method. Much much safer.

You didn't have the money to spend on a razor blade ?

Or simply try the vice + hammer method as mentioned above.

Think first, act later.

Also, the strange noise is probably electricity arcing between the IHS and the CPU on the exposed parts.
