Windows 8 Installation question.

HI everyone:

Here is my question, I have a HP computer comes with a widnows 8 pro.

And I have saved the product key (the one stored in BIOS) from the computer with a software. I am going to downgrade this computer to windows 7 which can be done easily. My question is: i dont want to waste the winodws 8 pro key. so can I install windows 8 with a MSDN windows 8 pro disc to another computer I built myself? I believe it is just the matter of activating it. thank you in advance!

Highly unlikely. Since it came with your computer, it is an OEM license which ties the product key to the motherboard. Only retail licenses allow installation on different motherboards.

I actually did it once before, I grabbed the product key from one of the OEM Hp computers. Start the installation on a Home built computer, with a MSDN windows 8 CD , I can enter the product key and Finish the installation. then activated the system no problem. but when I did the second time.(I mean format and reload windows). It tells me the key in use. I am just wondering if i can reactivate it again.

I should have been more clear: If its OEM, It will install on another computer but it won't activate.

This is a Very interesting question I ask myself it many times. Since I work with laptops and desktops often and people never use there CD-Keys on the device. I THINK you can only if the original computer is not using the CD-Key while you use it on the Other Device.. Then again I am not sure about it because I never really tried it. Always wanted a Legit Windows 7 Key just can't afford it at the moment.

But I did activated it. and use the system for 3 months. then It failed the activation for the second time.

what will happen if i use the phone to do it.

I dont think that system knows what computer you are on.

leggally I know i cant do it but technically I think it is possible.

Legally you cannot use the product key with another PC. In practice all version of windows until 8 (didn't try yet) work, and most time with multiple PC at the time. I Did this with 100's of XP key, and few windows 7, did once or twice with Vista but who really want Vista?tongue.gif

Right, I did that too, with a product key sticker in the back of the computer, an Oem CD for XP,Vista,Windows 7, You can Install the system anytime you like and activate it in limited times.

The key from BIOS is basically the same as the stick except it is a vitual one. I dont see a problem here. An oem cd will take care of it.. then The amout of times you can activate it is what I want to find out.

Well if you put it that way, then I think I heard a Wild Mod waking up so I would suggest you RUN! biggrin.gif
