Hi all

I am building a new gaming rig I have msi z77 mpower motherboard and im looking for the vga card I really like the asus gtx 680 directcu ii top but it is 3 slots graphics card and im thinking of doing sli in the future.

I have three questions here

1. If I want to sli two cards should they be from the exact type & brand ? Or what? Because I am new to sli thing

2.does my mobo can handle two asus gtx680 top ? By the way my case is cooler master haf x

3. Which pci slot should I use in my mpower mobo for the second card?

My other specs are:

Haf x case
i7 3770k
16 gb ram corsair vengeance 1600mhz
hdd 1tb wd blue
ssd 128 samsung 840 pro
psu cooler master gx750 w "I know I should upgrade my psu in the future when I want to sli:D"

Thank you

I'm not entirely sure if they'll fit, but I can tell you that it probably isn't worth the trouble. Even if they do fit, they'll be so close together that the top card will be pulling in all the heat of the bottom card, and will get very hot (I'm an asus user myself, tis the nature of the cards).

If you're going to go SLI, you're better off going with cards that have a blower style fan, so that heat is exhausted outside the case. If you really want aftermarket heatsinks, go with the gigabyte or msi cards - they're smaller, so more air will flow between the cards (and you're guaranteed a fit).

I (personally) don't recommend you to SLI an ASUS TOP 680 Card. They're 3 slot, even you CAN SLI them, the gap between them will SO CLOSE..unless you want to add some 120mm fan to help the airflow between both cards, I don't recommend it.

If you are interested with a non reference cooler, then I recommend the Gigabyte 670/680 card. They've an excellent cooler (same as ASUS)... but with only TWO SLOT instead of THREE.

On this note - if you have a preferance for the brand (styling?) the ASUS 670 is a great card, but only a two-slot. It's comparable to the gigabyte and msi cards. I think going 680 SLI is a poor return on your investment over and above 670s in SLI.

It will fit without any doubts but you'll run into heat issues but really depends on case.

Agreed...680 SLI is a poor choice, IMO (except for Lightning)...I think he will be better to grab a couple of 670 instead of 680...

Thank you guys

Well I am planning to sli in the future when single card cant play games on high-mid settings so it maybe 2 years minimum

I chose the asus because of the overclocking capabilities , the high cooling and low noise

what pci slot should I use for the other card ? Is it the one in the bottom ?

Out of curiosity, which card do you want to buy? a 670 or 680? Don't get me wrong, I love ASUS (except for their RMA's)....their product is reliable, quiet, and have a nice aesthetics.

680 Lightning is OOS now and I doubt MSI will re-stock the card considering the 700 series will be release ASAP (maybe).

If you really have to go with ASUS 680 TOP SLI, go for this dual-slot 4GB model instead:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121705

That'll give the card more room to breathe when you plan to add another for SLI. And do not use the last pci-e slot since it only runs at x4 speed on your mobo.
