Looking for a new Gaming Laptop. Suggestions?

Thread Starter

So recently (and a few times previously) I had problems with my battery either not charging or telling me what the battery level was at all. So Best Buy did several "repairs" which on the first send off included a new motherboard and powerjack. That fixed it for a while but they had to replace it two more times and the second time (past week) didn't work at all. So I now have $1350 to spend at Best Buy due to my accidental damage plan/extended Best Buy warranty.

So far the ones I'm leaning towards are.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/MSI---17.3%26%2334%3B-Laptop---12GB-Memory---750GB-Hard-Drive---Black/6927991.p;tab=specifications?id=1218814318063&skuId=6927991#tab=overview

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/MSI---17.3%26%2334%3B-Laptop---12GB-Memory---750GB-Hard-Drive---Black/6927964.p?id=1218814320124&skuId=6927964

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+17.3%26%2334%3B+Laptop+-+8GB+Memory+-+1TB+Hard+Drive+-+Black/7674057.p?id=1218858193064&skuId=7674057#tab=specifications

I'm leaning towards the MSI's as they have more RAM, Blu-Ray Readers and the same or better GFX card. Does anyone have any suggestions or further  information on any of those three or any others on Best Buy's site? I'd be willing to spend a bit more (maybe another hundred or two hundred  at max if it's staggeringly better) on a laptop. The plan pays for another laptop of the same price as my old one so $1350.

I was also curious as to whether the GTX 675m was really that much better than the GTX 670mx's I know they benchmark better but wasn't so sure that wasn't just because the memory clock speeds were 400 MHz higher on the 675m than on the 670mx. I know the GTX 675m has an architecture bandwidth of 256-bit while the GTX 670mx's are 192-bit. The other thing I was considering was the GTX 675m only have 2GB of RAM whereas the GTX670mx's have 3GB.

If I wasn't patient I would have just gone and bought the ASUS as they have it in the store but after finding out the GFX card on my last one was gimped I figured I'd spend ALOT more time researching.

As a reference this is the same model as what I'm upgrading from. (The Best Buy version had a 1GB 460m 128-bit card instead of the 1.5GB 460m 192-bit card)

quick question.

Does form factor / weight / size really play any part in your purchase? For instance, are you planning on taking this with you on the metro, or just occasionally moving it from your home to a hotel every now and then?

I'll tell you right now, 99% of OCN aren't going to recommend anything from bestbuy, so can you get your money back by any chance?

If you google Barebone Notebooks you should be able to find sights that will help you build your owen just like a PC. So you can choose the components. I have been waiting for stuff like this to come to laptops. So you could always give that a try. If not I say MSI!thumb.gif

You should just build a Micro ATX or ITX desktop. It takes all of 5 minutes to unplug everything and have it in a bag ready to transport.

Nah I can't get my money back the money is from the warranty I got about 2 years ago. As far as mobility I'll move it around the house alot and take it out and about sometimes (not every day) but I don't mind the weight so much as long as I'm not walking several miles. I only buy (bought) from Best Buy because of how accident prone I am (the cost of replacing normally or through RMA shipments and shipping or labor fee's quickly added up to where I could have bought a couple for the costs of repairs and such) the best buy plan just helps take the hassle out. If I can't fix it in several hours by taking the HDD out and scanning it for viruses, disc and registry errors, etc. I'll just take everything off the laptop wipe the HDD and send it to Best Buy to fiddle with the innards as I just don't have the time to.

Also I already have a desktop which I use for gaming when I am in my computer room, this is used aroudn the house when I'm busy doing other stuff or spending time with friends and family.
