Help 2560x1600 Res Sli GTX 680 2GB Enough?

Was wondering would a 2GB Nvidia GTX 680 In Sli be enough for a 2560x1600 resolution monitor? The monitor itself is the latest from Dell 30 inch U3014. I do want to play games on the highest settings possible but was wondering is more GB required for that? Because I have read online more GB is better for high resolution monitors even though 2x GTX 680's will add up to 4GB but I understand only 2GB will be available don't no where the other 2GB goes? rolleyes.gif

2GB SLI is fine. Resolution doesn't cause VRAM issues until you start using 3x displays in surround, or use crazy downsampling resolutions such as 3840x2160.

If you can afford it though, go with 4GB just to ensure that future titles don't run into any issues.

As for where the 2nd card's VRAM goes, it mirrors the first card's VRAM since it needs it's own copy of textures, etc to work from.

Just think of it as allocation/buffer of chunks of data up to 2GB.

I power my current rig w/display with a single 680 and play on max settings on all games w/ AA x2.

Which model of the 680 did you have now? and What are the games did you want to play? I think 680 SLI is enough for your resolution. But I prefer get the 4GB model instead of 2GB....but it's just me (maybe).

If you haven't bought your first 680, why not buy a Titan? My wife plays on a 30 inch monitor like you. I think she was getting about 88 frames per second avg on the Tomb raider bench mark with most settings on high. One card will also make less noise than two. We had two 7970's in her system, but it was too noisy for her tastes.

AMD cards are a good option for that resolution as well. Though I think you'll be fine with the 2gb versions of the 680.

Thanks for the replies guys really appreciate it. The reason for asking this question was also that I have read online some games using more then 1.5GB of VRAM these are obviously the latest games, first person shooter. smile.gif

He doesn't have 4gb..
